U.S. President Barack Obama says he is determined to halt piracy in the shipping lanes off the coast of Somalia. Mr. Obama spoke one day after the dramatic rescue of an American cargo ship captain who was held hostage by Somali pirates for five days. Richard Phillips was rescued on Sunday after members of an elite U.S. Navy unit shot three of his captors. President Obama ordered the military to take action if it was believed that Phillips' life was in danger. He said he is pleased with the results, noting that the captain's safety was his top concern throughout the standoff. I am very proud of the efforts of the U.S. military and many other departments and agencies that worked tirelessly to resolve this situation," he said. Mr. Obama said the American people also have reason to be proud of the captain who offered himself as a hostage to protect the crew of his cargo ship. "I share our nation's admiration for Captain Phillips' courage and leadership and selfless concern for his crew," he said. The president's first public comments on the dramatic rescue came on Monday at an event at the U.S. Department of Transportation. His initial response was delivered Sunday in the form of a written statement. And in his remarks, the president made many of the same points. He vowed again that America will do all it can to end piracy in the region, working in concert with nations around the world. We are going to have to continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks. We have to continue to be prepared to confront them when they arise. And we have to ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes," he said. President Obama did not refer to a new round of threats from the pirates, who say they want revenge for the killing of three of their own in the rescue operation. At the U.S. Defense Department, spokesman Bryan Whitman said there is always concern that the use of force by the military could lead to reprisals. But he said the shootings might make the pirates less inclined to attack ships. He said that until now, the pirates have been operating almost with impunity. I think the actions the ed States military took - the other night, the other day, yesterday - could certainly have that affect where people are less inclined to engage in that type of activity," he said. Pirates hold more than 230 hostages from several countries. Andrea Phillips, the wife of the rescued cargo ship captain, says they remain in her thoughts. On Monday, she made her first appearance since the rescue. A bad case of laryngitis prevented her from speaking on her own behalf. Instead, she wrote a statement that was by Allison McCool, an employee of the shipping company that employs her husband. Andrea wants you all to remember that they are just one family that has been impacted. There are many more families going through what the Phillips have endured presently. And those families are in the prayers of the Phillips family," she said. It is unclear when Richard Phillips will be reunited with his family, although they have spoken by telephone. In her statement, Andrea Phillips said her husband considers the U.S. military to be the real heroes of his ordeal. 04/67212。

It’s nearly nine a.m. on a workday but Noah Kaufman, volunteer manager of the 113th Street Play Garden, cannot help stopping at the 12-by-30-meter green space. Grabbing a hand trowel, he turns over the pebbly loam looking for worms for his plot. New York City is, if anything, the built environment. We have plenty of concrete. We have plenty of bricks. We have plenty of steel," says Kaufman. "We have little, little places like this vest pocket park, which are a small oasis, a piece of green, a place where there are trees, where there are weed trees, fruits trees which have been planted by humans or planted by nature provide a little refuge from the city. So for the neighbors here on 113th street, this is our front yard and we share it." The community garden has been a refuge for Alexandra Patz and her 7-year-old son ever since her family moved to New York from the suburbs where they had their own yard. When we moved to the city, I was glad to find on this block that there was this little garden where we could become involved, and where my son could experience digging and growing things," says Patz.

Long live the fat American长命百岁 美国胖子!Obesity may threaten life expectancy. Jun 30th 2011 | NEW YORK | from the print editionAMERICA’S obesity epidemic is so called for a reason. Roughly one in three adults is obese. In 2008 close to 25m Americans were diabetic, according to a study published on June 25th. Nevertheless, Americans are living longer than ever. In 2007 the average life expectancy at birth was 78 years. This follows decades of progress. The question is whether obesity might change that. National progress in life expectancy masks wide local disparities, according to a study published on June 15th and written by researchers at the University of Washington and Imperial College London. Men in Holmes County, Mississippi, for example, have a life expectancy of 65.9 years, the same as men in Pakistan and 15.2 years behind men in Fairfax, Virginia. Gaps between America’s counties have widened since the early 1980s. Most alarming, 702 counties, or 30% of those studied, saw a statistically significant decline in life expectancy for women from 2000 to 2007; 251 counties saw a statistically significant decline for men. 201107/143225。

Bill Gates:How a Geek Changed the World 盖茨宣布退休 Fiona Bruce presents the definitive profile of Bill Gates as he prepares to step down next week from full-time involvement with microsoft. Next week, Bill Gates is stepping down from Microsoft to focus on his charity. Its goal -- to rid the world of diseases like malaria. By giving away around 30 billion dollars, he is always welcome in the corridors of power. Is he supportive of the work you do in the foundation?Yes, I'd say that Tony Blair and Gordon Brown have been two of the best world leaders on these issues both in terms of giving them feasibility and increasing their generosity. As well as dropping in on Downing Street, Bill's got a packed schedule of business meetings. His new agenda means he is even busier than ever.We have got a meeting with a number of chief information officers from big UK companies. From there he actually then meets with the Sunday Times business editor. Board meeting is three minutes, which is... (laugh)What can you say in three minutes? Maybe hail Bill Gates, he said "Oh."I'd like to introduce Bill Gates.Chairman Bill may soon be spending less time in the office, but the billionaire sales rep can't resist pitching the latest Microsoft product -- touch recognition technology.I, I picked a particular application here just to show you how touch might work. Underneath here this is just a Windows personal computer that has a camera and some magic software, so it's watching my fingers. For the boss of Microsoft, it's a time of transition. The geek who transformed the computer industry is being rebooted, and the 2008 version of Bill Gates could have an even bigger impact.Bill Gates is standing down from the company he built into one of the most profitable in the world. Having made his fortune, he is about to embark on the next stage of his career -- giving it away. The Bill amp; Melinda Gates Foundation is growing in size and ambition, almost as fast as Microsoft did. But it's a family affair, to which the couple have promised to give almost all their fortune. By donating 30 billion dollars to charity, Gates is now sharing a global platform with presidents, prime ministers, and even rock stars. This wealth, we've chosen not to pass it to our children or, you know, buy all sorts of ventures or whatever. We are getting it back to society in the way that can have the most positive impact.Until now it's been Melinda Gates who's been spending more time on the foundation. This is, this is a challenge that we have, because people look at Bill and me and say, my gosh, you have a ton of money, right? Ok, so we've started this foundation. And when we started it, we have, we put into it 30 billion dollars. That's all money Bill's earned essentially from this incredible company -- Microsoft. And a friend of ours...Bill Gates will soon be working alongside his wife, and friends say they complement each other. geek: [N-COUNT]You can refer to someone who is skilled with computers, and who seems more interested in them than in people, as a geek(INFORMAL)200811/56043。

France wants to export nuclear reactors. Who will buy them?法国想出口核反应堆,谁人将买?FOR France, nuclear power has long been a source of national pride. Its European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) is the worldrsquo;s most advanced nuclear reactor and some consider it the safest. But since the nuclear accident at Fukushima in Japan, potential buyers have been having second thoughts (although the plant in question was not French.) On December 12th Areva, Francersquo;s state-owned nuclear champion, said it would take a euro;2.4 billion (.1 billion) charge against profits. This will give the firm its first ever operating loss, of perhaps euro;1.6 billion for 2011. Areva is the worldrsquo;s only one-stop nuclear shop, selling everything from uranium to fuel recycling. Much of the charge came from a slump in the value of UraMin, a uranium-mining firm bought for a giddy price in 2007, when nuclear power was surging. The price of uranium, which fuels reactors, tumbled afterwards (see chart). Before Fukushima, Arevarsquo;s managers went on a hiring binge, expecting rapid growth in sales to rich and emerging markets alike. Now the firm will cut costs and investment, fire workers and sell assets. In Europe, Arevarsquo;s most profitable market, people are newly nervous about nuclear power. Germany, Switzerland and Belgium have all opted to abandon it. Lower natural-gas prices have made it less competitive. And serious carbon curbs, which would boost a business that emits virtually no carbon dioxide, are nowhere in sight.

The terrible threat of unlicensed interior designers对无牌室内设计师的可怕威胁May 12th 2011 | from the print editionIN 1941 Franklin Roosevelt added two new items to America’s ancestral freedoms of speech and worship: freedom from fear and freedom from want. Today’s politicians offer a far more generous : freedom from unlicensed hair-cutters, freedom from cowboy flower-arrangers and, most important of all, freedom from rogue interior designers. What is the point of enjoying freedom from fear or want, after all, if you cannot enjoy freedom from poorly co-ordinated colour schemes?1941年富兰克林. In the 1950s, when organisation man ruled, fewer than 5% of American workers needed licences. Today, after three decades of deregulation, the figure is almost 30%. Add to that people who are preparing to obtain a licence or whose jobs involve some form of certification and the share is 38%. Other rich countries impose far fewer fetters than the land of the free. In Britain only 13% of workers need licences (though that has doubled in 12 years).

A resurgence in illegal logging takes its toll非法砍伐再度猖獗OF THE five dirt-poor farmers who set out from Chhoeu Slab village in November in search of rosewood, only four returned. The fifth is recuperating in a Thai hospital, having been shot by a Thai border patrol. The boom in trade of the rich-hued hardwood has aly claimed 15 lives in 2011, and dozens more have been wounded by Thai soldiers. An unknown number have simply vanished. The shootings could yet become a source of tension between the Thai and Cambodian governments, whose relations have improved immeasurably since Yingluck Shinawatra became Thai prime minister in August.11月,五个一贫如洗的农民从Chhoeu Slab村出发踏上了寻找紫檀树的征程,最终返回的只有四个。 Slung along the Thai-Cambodian border, the forests of the Dangrek mountains were once brimming with the luxury wood. But rosewood stocks have fallen precipitously in recent years as illegal logging has run rampant. For Cambodian loggers, that means having to push farther into Thailandrsquo;s territory;risking capture, injury or death. The cause of the boom is simple: growing demand in Vietnam and, especially, China. To meet the demand, a complex network of loggers has sprung up, with the riskiest work carried out by the poorest. Some are country men plucked out by ringleaders promising large sums for sawn planks. Others are villagers solicited by local soldiers. Timber is smuggled out of Cambodia in boats and trucks. For years the trade was overseen by top officials, tycoons and their families, until international attention and even the Cambodian prime ministerrsquo;s displeasure put a clamp on things. Environmental groups say it is now led by Cambodiarsquo;s armed forces. A long-running Thai-Cambodian border dispute that flared up in early 2011 around the temple of Preah Vihear has been a boon for the trade: the army has free access to surrounding areas that others do not. Inevitably, prices are rising with demand. On the international market, the best rosewood planks can sell for ,000 a cubic metre. A rosewood wardrobe can fetch ,000. And as the trade diverts wood abroad, prices within Cambodia have climbed too. 166595。

Even though women continue to advance in American society, many little girls still get stuck in a world of fairytale princesses and frilly pink dresses. That does not sit well with journalist Peggy Orenstein, who mused about her young daughter’s obsession with Disney princesses and predilection for the color pink in a New York Times Magazine essay. She reflects on the overwhelming emphasis on this stereotyped ideal for girls in a new book, "Cinderella Ate My Daughter." Orenstein is at war with what she describes as our hyper-feminized girlie-girl consumer culture. What is marketed to girls is this idea of pink and pretty. It fuses the idea of appearance with innocence, and then presents the interest in appearance as being evidence of their innocence," she says. "But what’s happening is that girls are emphasizing the way they look more and more and more. So, we’re talking about makeup and provocative dresses and all of that kind of thing." Many parents don’t see anything wrong with their little girls playing Cinderella, putting on make-up and dressing up as cute princesses, but Orenstein wonders about the long-term impact of encouraging that behavior. I think parenting is such a present tense thing. When your daughter is 3 months old, you can't imagine having a 6-year old. And when you have a 6-year old, you don’t want to imagine having a 13-year old. You don’t tend to step back and see the context and the arc. I wanted to provide that for parents so they can make their choices more intentionally and really think about whether indulging them in this when they’re three was going to be healthy for them when they were 13." 201103/129448。
