Generation after generation, we just look the same. The problem is one of time. The periods over which even tiny changes happen are so long that almost beyond our imagination. But to make sense of those time periods, to see them in some perspective, I've brought you here to a cave deep in the French Pyrenees. In the middle of the last century, a bookseller from a nearby town of Tuluz, used to visit this cave. And as a hobby, he dug around for bones and evidence of prehistoric remains. And he did this for some 40 years. And then late in the afternoon, on June the 11th, 1905, having been digging all day, he prepared to go but chose to go by a different route. And as he left, he was passing this wall and something caught his eye. He lifted up his lamp and this is what he saw--stencils of human hands from nearly 30,000 years ago. They are amongst the oldest images made by human beings on the planet. They are 6 times older than the Pyramids in Egypt and 8 times older than Stonehenge. Quite what they signified to the people who made them, no one knows. They were a Stone Age people and they came here at the coldest part of a last Ice Age. And over here are the most interesting images of all. It is thought that these stencils here were made by someone no bigger than a toddler, a child in a primitive world, the son or daughter of somebody who you would think of as a caveman. And yet if I had taken such a child and brought it up as a baby in my own house, it would be indistinguishable from one of my own children. Because by the time these people pressed their hands against these walls, all the changes which make us what we are had aly happened. The evolution of the human body was, to all intents and purposes, complete. If this child were to be raised with my own children, it would look the same, it would talk the same, it would play the same computer games, and it would grow up wanting to be a doctor, a footballer, or maybe even an astronaut.words and expressionsPyrenees: 比利牛斯山脉:欧洲西南部山脉,从比斯开湾沿着法国与西班牙边境,到地中海在皮科·德·皮妮特,它高达3,406·2米(11,168英尺)stencil:The lettering or design produced with such a sheet.图案,文字:用模板或蜡纸复制出的字形或图案toddler:One who toddles, especially a young child learning to walk. The synthetic material is indistinguishable from real silk, but much cheaper."" to all intents and purposes:实际上200707/16010

Economic Policy Makers Discuss Measures to Restore Market ConfidenceIMFC讨论恢复市场信心的措施 The governing body of the International Monetary Fund is meeting Saturday in Washington to discuss a weakening global economy, inflation and proposals to stabilize financial markets still reeling from bank losses stemming from the U.S. home mortgage crisis. The finance ministers and central bankers of 24 advanced and developing countries are discussing reforms collectively advanced by the G7 group of industrialized nations - in other words Europe, North America, and Japan. Christine Lagarde is the French economy minister. The fact that we are asking for more transparency, more disclosure by the banks, on the one hand; the fact that we're asking for better liquidity by the banks as well, is certainly going to help the current crisis," he said. Lagarde spoke to Bloomberg television. The G7 proposals are usually accepted by the IMF's governing board. On Friday evening, U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson hosted a meeting of his colleagues from Europe, Canada and Japan along with commercial bankers impacted by the current credit squeeze, the world's most significant financial turmoil since the Asian financial crisis 10 years ago. Addressing the IMF panel on Saturday, Paulson said the first six months of 2008 will be difficult for the U.S. economy, which may have aly entered its first recession since 2001. Paulson is calling on the 185-member-nation IMF to sharpen its focus on currency exchange rates and to more closely monitor financial markets. These weekend meetings are the regular semi-annual gatherings of the IMF's governing panel, whose developing country members - among others - include China, India, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. The challenges currently facing the world economy are unusual since at the same time that economic growth is slowing inflationary pressures are rising. Oil has touched a record 2 a barrel, and the price of rice has nearly doubled in just three months. IMF economists expect the world economy to slow to under four percent growth in 2008, its slowest performance in five years. 200804/34727

Mugabe Spokesman to Western Critics: Go Hang穆加贝发言人反驳国际社会批评 A spokesman for Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe has rejected criticism of the country's presidential election, saying those who call the vote illegitimate can 'go hang'. Mr. Mugabe is attending an African Union summit. Zimbabwe's presidential spokesman George Charamba told reporters Tuesday the West has no right to judge the legitimacy of the election that returned Mr. Mugabe to power. Many Western governments have described the election Friday as a sham because of widesp intimidation and because Mr. Mugabe's challenger had withdrawn. The ed States has called Mr. Mugabe's inauguration illegitimate. But Charamba had harsh words for those critics, suggesting outsiders should mind their own business. They can go and hang. They can go and hang, a thousand times. They've no claim on Zimbabwe at all, and that's exactly the issue," he said. Charamba was speaking on the sidelines of the African Union summit, where Mr. Mugabe was warmly received by many heads of state. The spokesman laughed off suggestions that his summit colleagues might try to persuade Mr. Mugabe to accept a Kenya-style power sharing agreement with his political rival Morgan Tsvangirai. He has come here as president of Zimbabwe. He will go home as president of Zimbabwe, and when you visit Zimbabwe, he will be there to see you as president of the people of Zimbabwe," said Charamba. Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the MDC, has denied reports that any talks are under way with Mr. Mugabe's ZANU-PF party to form a government of national unity. The statement said "nothing can be as malicious or further from the truth." Zimbabwe's political turmoil, and Mr. Mugabe's presence has completely overshadowed the business of this Red Sea resort summit. Discussions about meeting anti-poverty and development goals went virtually ignored. Seats were empty at a news conference to discuss the summit theme, providing Africa with clean water and sanitation. An estimated 30 African heads of state and government attended the two-day summit. 200807/43204
