To learn a foreign language, the culture background of the target language will helps a lot. Take this sentence For example: They had planned on marrying as soon as they graduated from high school but "Uncle Sam" had other ideas. Most of us know the "Uncle Sam" means the government of ed States. But suppose we don't know it, we will got misunderstanded. Brother Jonathan"代表美国人,源自华盛顿的好友,美国民族英雄、革命志士"Jonathan Trumbull"(1710-1785)。 It has often been said that opposites attract but research suggests that initial spark of attraction soon fades and does not make for a long and happy married life.A survey carried out by The Oxford Internet Institute, looked at the habits of 1,000 couples to find the secret of a happy relationship. The poll was conducted for online matchmaking service eHarmony.People who want to sign up for the site, complete a comprehensive questionnaire of more than 200 questions, which takes about an hour to complete."At the time that we launched in 2000, people were really sceptical that you could bring technology or scientific research to something that had always been attributed in these magical terms to some unknowable quality about why two people connect," Greg Waldorf, eHarmony's chief executive said.eHarmony to claim that every day on average 118 US couples who met on eHarmony get married--2% of the total number of marriages.Paula Hall, a relationship psychotherapist at the UK relationship service says: "Compatibility is an essential ingredient in relationship happiness, but some differences are inevitable. How couples manage those differences is the key to long-term success."But there is not one formula for all couples. Analysis of the data gathered by eHarmony shows that across cultures couples value very different things. For instance, Britons are the least likely to complain if modern life leaves their partners too tired for sex. Australians are less worried by their spouse being less affectionate and Americans argue more.Happily married people in the UK tend to agree more on how to make major decisions, how family finances are handled, the division of household tasks, and how to deal with parents and in-laws. Compared to the US and Australia, UK couples are the least likely to be worried if their partner is regularly too tired for sex.In the US, couples put more focus on the interpersonal facets of their relationships, reporting that they laugh together, exchange ideas, kiss, and confide in each other more often. However, they also have more arguments and are more likely to report that their partners annoy them.In Australia, couples put a lot of stock in working on projects together, and it is the country where couples are least likely to be concerned that their spouse doesn't show enough love and affection.Couples in the US, the UK and Australia experience a dip in marital satisfaction around the birth of their first child, which Mr Waldorf attributes to a period of adjustment to the change in the relationship. Chinese couples, by contrast, actually experience a rise in satisfaction, which Mr Waldorf suggests is due to a stronger immediate family support network. /200812/59291We’ve talked about human attraction between men and women in the past here and here. Previous researchers argued that what women value depended on the type of relationship they were looking for. Women looking for long-term partners want someone who will be a good provider for them and their children, but women seeking short-term flings care more about masculinity and physical attractiveness, features that may be passed down to children.New research, however, has identified four categories of characteristics women seek in a partner:* Good genes, reflected in desirable physical traitsWomen look for attractiveness because it means the person has “good genes” (whether or not they actually do).* ResourcesWho doesn’t like a person with good resources — a home, money, a stable good-paying job — that can help provide for them and future children?* The desire to have children and good parenting skillsThis, of course, only applies to women who are actually looking to have children (or more children).* Loyalty and devotionNot much point in getting involved in a relationship if the person you’re interested in being involved with isn’t able to be loyal and committed to you. Most women attempt to secure the best combination of the qualities they desire from the same man. A small portion of women who do not find a partner with all the qualities may trade some characteristics for others. We don’t think any of this is rocket science or particularly new. Although women’s selectivity across categories reflected how attractive they appeared to other people, the researchers found the characteristics men desired in a partner did not vary based on their own physical attractiveness. /200810/53683When Yu Bingbing, a 28-year-old marketresearch manager, is on her way to work each morning, she always cannot help feeling anxiousabout whether she has locked the door of her apartmentand turned off the gas.28岁的于冰冰是某公司市场调研部经理,每天清晨上班的途中,她总会不由自主地感到焦虑:“房门是不是锁了,煤气是不是关了?”"I'm usually wrestlingwith these feelings for the entire day," Yu said. Working at an international pharmaceuticalfirm, Yu looks older than she is and her heavily made-up face always has an exhausted look. Since I have been promoted to a managerialposition, I lose my temper with my parents and husband more frequently just because of some trivialthings," she said, adding that slight wrinkles and acne on her face have irritated her even more, and even luxury cosmetics cannot help her. I have to work six days a week and don't even have extra off time when I'm sick," she said. "I have to push myself to become a workaholicsince the competition in my company is really fierceand I also have to pay a 5,000 yuan monthly mortgage, besides saving a certain amount of money for my planned baby." Life is like riding on a rollercoaster for Yu and many other members of China's post-80s generation, the first generation born after the introduction of the family-planning policyand the group to benefitmost from the country's opening-up policy and its booming economy. Being the only child in their family, and without much to trouble them during their youth, most of them were taken good care of or even spoiled by their parents and grandparents. Having such a relatively carefree youth - when this generation reached adulthoodand had to cope with soaring prices, the high cost of raising children and intense competitionin the workplace - they suffered a rudeawakening. According to statistics, the population of China's post-80s generation is over 200 million. The media usually refers to them as "slaves" to property, credit cards, children and marriage.

It's summertime, and the livin' is easy. For many Americans, this is the season to travel. Why? Because school is out. Because the weather is great. And most of all, because we all deserve a break. When Americans take a break, they often head for their favorite vacation spot. Throughout their history, Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants had to travel to get to the New World. Once they arrived, they settled along the East Coast. But they weren't content to stay there. Explorers and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories. Later, settlers moved west to develop these new areas. As a result of this westward migration, Americans eventually occupied the whole continent-from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Even today, Americans seem unable to stay put. Research says that the average American moves every five years. Besides their habit of changing addresses, Americans are used to traveling. Some people make long-distance commutes to work daily. Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friends or relatives in distant states. Others go on low-budget weekend excursions and stay in economy motels. Those with more expensive tastes choose luxurious resorts and hotels. Camping out in the great outdoors appeals to adventurous types. Some travel in recreational vehicles (RVs) to camp out in comfort, while others "rough it" by sleeping in tents. Most Americans prefer to travel within their nation's borders. Why? For one thing, it's cheaper than traveling abroad, and there's no language problem. But besides that, the vast American territory offers numerous tourist attractions. Nature lovers can enjoy beaches, mountains, canyons, lakes and a wealth of natural wonders. Major cities offer visitors a multitude of urban delights. The convenience of modern freeways, railways and airplanes makes travel in America as easy as pie. Many American vacations are as unique as the people who take them. Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind. More and more "family friendly" vacation resorts offer special programs for children. History buffs seek out famous historical sites and museums. Environmentalists prefer "green vacations." These trips allow them to observe flora and fauna up-close without disturbing the sensitive balance of nature. Some people find sea cruises relaxing and refreshing. Others hit the water to go fishing, skiing or white-water rafting. Daring souls get the thrill of a lifetime on trekking expeditions and safaris in remote places from Africa to Asia. Americans aren't the only people in the world who travel. International business, mass communication and jet airplanes have created a world of globetrotters. People all over the world enjoy going abroad to travel. And no matter where they live, people enjoy visiting scenic spots in their own country. But being on the go makes Americans what they are: people on the move. In America, almost every-body is a tourist sometime. /200804/34319

Friday and the ThirteenthFriday-the Thirteenth has long been considered extremely unlucky because it has some bad associations which came from mythology, tale of the Bible, and the customs and habits. According to the Bible, the Lord God created the first man,Adam. Then he took a rib from Adam's body and out of it created the first woman, Eve. It was said that Adam was created on a Friday and it was on Friday that Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, and on a Friday they died. Friday was also the common day in England for executing criminals , for which it was sometimes known as Hanging Day.From the old Norse myth people got the idea that 13 people sitting at a table to have a dinner was unlucky. And this superstition was confirmed by the last supper of Christ and his disciples. Bible tells us that Christ sat down with his 12 disciples, which made up the number 13, at the last supper when Judas, one of the 12 disciples , sold his master for thirty pieces of silver. Christ was killed by nailing on the cross the following day on a Friday. /200905/69007

An Irishman blinded by an explosion two years ago has had his sight restored after doctors inserted his son's tooth in his eye, he said on Wednesday.Bob McNichol, 57, from County Mayo in the west of the country, lost his sight in a freak accident when red-hot liquid aluminium exploded at a re-cycling business in November 2005."I thought that I was going to be blind for the rest of my life," McNichol told RTE state radio. After doctors in Ireland said there was nothing more they could do, McNichol heard about a miracle operation called Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis (OOKP) being performed by Dr Christopher Liu at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton in England. The technique, pioneered in Italy in the 1960s, involves creating a support for an artificial cornea from the patient's own tooth and the surrounding bone. The procedure used on McNichol involved his son Robert, 23, donating a tooth, its root and part of the jaw.McNichol's right eye socket was rebuilt, part of the tooth inserted and a lens inserted in a hole drilled in the tooth. The first operation lasted ten hours and the second five hours."It is pretty heavy going," McNichol said. "There was a 65 percent chance of me getting any sight."Now I have enough sight for me to get around and I can watch television. I have come out from complete darkness to be able to do simple things," McNichol said. /200803/28878
