Gosh! Im so overwhelmed! Thank you to everyone that has shared their story tonight and has contributed to what has been the most heart-warming moment of my year. Good evening! Being a part of HeForShe for the last two years has been an incredible learning experience for me. There have been some really hard moments and a lot of amazing ones – ones I never could have imagined. The UN Secretary-General, the entire EU Commission, the NATO Secretary-General, the President of the International Olympic Committee, numerous heads of state and politicians from around the world, including those that youve heard from tonight, and everyone from Usain Bolt to Tom Hanks are now all HeForShe. Weve crashed the UN website on multiple occasions – sorry about that! We have lit up the Empire State Building, seen HeForShe in Times Square, and made it a term in the Urban Dictionary. After two million media impressions, 1.1 million pledged HeForShes have made practical commitments, as have some of the worlds leading universities and companies, to make gender equality a priority now in their work and within their communities. Surprisingly though, it was during the hard moments that I made the best discoveries about what it means to be part of this movement. There is genuinely a spectrum of amazing feminists out there who have not only given me invaluable advice, but also broadened my perspective and reinforced my belief that we are all linked; we all belong to a long history of people who have made sacrifices, some groups much more than others, in order to make indefinably large contributions to our modern lives. Weve seen seismic shifts in culture recently. I couldnt believe my eyes when I turned on the TV to see that Bud Light was pledging gender equality and equal pay as part of their current advertising campaign. We aly have some amazing things happening, some amazing female leaders, but I dont know if I would have believed you if you had told me two years ago, before I made my HeForShe speech, that we might have the first female President of the ed States – please dont let me down, America! – a female Prime Minister of the ed Kingdom, and possibly for the first time in history, a female UN Secretary-General. While women still only make up such a small percentage of political leadership, to e the awesome Michelle Obama, ;because of these women, girls and boys all over the world will have real-life examples that women are leaders.; In the last two years, if Ive learned anything, if they have shown me anything, it is that nothing – nothing – is impossible. And thats why tonight, as well as saying thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you have done, I ask you to recommit yourself to be a part of gender equality. I genuinely feel that we are closer to a gender-equal world, and certainly closer than we were two years ago, and I know that each and every HeForShe has played such a huge part in that. I am proud to have been part of lots of amazing things in my life, but there is nothing that I am prouder of than being part of this. Thank you so much. Have a wonderful night!201610/469380VOA流行美语 135: gang up on somebodyLarry和李华到物馆去看中国艺术品的展出,不过Larry好像心情不太好。今天李华会学到两个常用语:gang up on someone和basket case.(Indoor crowd in a museum)LH: Larry, 怎么啦?你好像很不开心?LL: Oh, it's just that my mother, father, and sister are all upset with me for not calling them enough. I feel as though my whole family is ganging up on me.LH: 既然你爸爸妈妈还有你都说你打电话回家太少,那恐怕情况确实是如此。不过,他们可能不了解你是工作和学习太忙了,所以才没法经常给他们打电话啊!不过,Larry,你说你家人gang up on you. 那是什么意思?LL: If two or more people join together against another person, then they are "ganging up" on that person.LH: 噢,gang up on someone就是合伙对付某个人的意思。 LL: Exactly, maybe they think that if they gang up on me, then I'll be sure to call them at least every other day.LH:那你以后会不会隔一天就给他们打电话呢? 说几句话就可以了嘛!LL:Has anyone ever ganged up on you, Li Hua?LH: 嗯,我不记得有什么人联合对付过我。 LL: That's a good example, Li Hua. In my house, it was the opposite. We had three cats and one dog. The cats used to gang up and chase the dog around the house.LH: 啊! 我还没听说过有会怕几只猫的呢!LL: Actually, he was a pretty big dog; he just wasn't very brave. Whenever the three cats would gang up on him, he would try to hide under the bed, but he was too big to hide there.LH: 原来它还是只大,就是胆小。一只大因为怕三只猫而想躲到床底下!Larry,我没听说过,你肯定是在瞎说。LL: No, it's true!******LH: 嘿!Larry,你和你家人谈过了吗?他们还在气你不常打电话吗?LL: They aren't mad at me anymore, but my mom is a basket case because my sister will be graduating soon.LH: 你妈妈怎么啦?basket case? 这和basket有什么关系?LL: Oh, a basket case is someone who is really upset or nervous. My mom is upset that my sister is graduating and will be leaving home for college.LH: 噢,原来basket case就是指一个人很紧张,很不高兴。你高中毕业后,很快就要到外地念大学;你妈妈紧张不安是可以理解的。LL: That's true. However, I think my sister will be just fine. There's no need for Mom to be such a basket case.LH: 那倒是,你妈妈没有必要那么紧张。我刚来美国的时候,也是个basket case。我那时好紧张,因为我的英语还不是很好,我担心听不懂别人讲的话而犯错误。LL: That's pretty normal. How about now? Are you still a basket case? Or have you adjusted to life in the U.S.?LH: 嗯,现在我只有在考试的时候才会紧张。每学期总是有一个礼拜,我会紧张得睡不着,吃不下。LL: I didn't realize that exams turned you into such a basket case. Why do you worry so much when you always get good grades?LH: 我也不知道为什么我那么在乎考试成绩。但我也没办法控制,只要考试一来,我就马上成了个basket case。我想我大概是对自己信心不足吧!LL: Well, next time you feel yourself turning into a basket case, let me know and I'll make you learn to be relaxed. /200602/3355

All right. Thank you. Thank you so much. Thank you, President Reif. Thank you, Class of 1966. That was an alarming walking along and seeing 66 and then somebody saying ;Oh, its their 50s,; I just, I almost had a heart attack.Time, time flies! And mostly, thank you to the Class of 2016.Its such an honor to be part of your day – its an honor to be here with you, with your friends, your professors, and your parents. But lets be honest: This is an honor I didnt really earn.Im just gonna put that out there. I mean, Ive seen the list of previous commencement speakers: Nobel Prize winners, the UN Secretary General, President of the World Bank, President of the ed States. And who did you get? The guy who did the voice for a cartoon horse. If youre wondering which cartoon horse: thats ;Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,; a movie some of you might have grown up watching. Its definitely one of my best performances as a cartoon horse.Well, look, I dont even have a college degree. As you might have heard, I went to Harvard. I just didnt graduate from Harvard. I got pretty close, but I started to get movie roles and I didnt finish all my courses. But I put on a cap and gown and I walked with my class; my Mom and Dad and brother were there and everything; I just never got an actual degree. You could say I kind of fake graduated. So you can imagine how excited I was when President Reif called to invite me to speak at the MIT commencement. Then you can imagine how sorry I was to learn that the MIT commencement speaker does not get to go home with a degree. So, yes, for the second time in my life, I am fake graduating from a college in my hometown. And my Mom and my Dad and my brother are here again. And this time, I brought my wife and my four kids. So, welcome, kids, to your Dads second fake graduation. You must be so proud. So, as I said, my Mom is here. Shes a professor, so she knows the value of an MIT degree. She also knows that I couldnt have gotten in here.I mean, Harvard, you know, barely. Or a safety school like Yale.Look, Im not running for any kind of office. I can say pretty much whatever I want. No, I couldnt have gotten in here, but I did grow up here. I grew up in the neighborhood, in the shadow of this imposing place. My brother Kyle and I, and my friend Ben Affleck – brilliant guy, good guy, never really amounted to much – we all grew up right here, in Central Square, children of this sometimes rocky marriage between this city and its great institutions. To us, MIT was kind of like The Man – this big, impressive, impersonal force – at least was our provincial, knee-jerk, teenage reaction, anyway. Then Ben and I shot a movie here. One of the scenes in Good Will Hunting was based on something that actually happened to my brother Kyle. He was visiting a physicist that we knew at MIT, and he was walking down the Infinite Corridor. He saw those blackboards that lined the halls. So my brother, whos an artist, picked up some chalk and wrote an incredibly elaborate, totally fake version of an equation. And it was so cool and completely insane that no one erased it for months. This is a true story.Anyway, Kyle came back and he said, you guys, listen to this – Theyve got blackboards running down the hall! Because these kids are so smart they just need to, you know, drop everything and solve problems! It was then we knew for sure we could never have gotten in.But like I said, we later made a movie here, which did not go unnoticed on campus. In fact, Id like to you some actual lines, some selected passages, from the review of Good Will Hunting in the MIT school paper. If you havent seen it, Will was me, and Sean was played by the late Robin Williams, a man I miss a hell of a lot.So Im ing here: ;Good Will Hunting is very entertaining; but then again, any movie partially set at MIT has to be.;201607/452179

What Im really curious about is if one day,我真正好奇的是会不会有一天,it will be possible to repair, rebuild and augment our own bodies with stuff we make in the kitchen. Speaking of kitchens, heres some asparagus. Theyre tasty, and they make your pee smell funny. Now, I was in my kitchen, and I was noticing that when you look down the stalks of these asparagus,有一次,我在我的厨房里发现,当你观察芦笋茎秆那一端(的截面),what you can see are all these tiny little vessels. And when we image them in the lab, you can see how the cellulose forms these structures. This image reminds me of two things:这张图让我想到了两样东西。our blood vessels and the structure and organization of our nerves and spinal cord. So heres the question: Can we grow axons and neurons down these channels? Because if we can, then maybe we can use asparagus to form new connections如果我们可以实现,也许我们就能用芦笋来形成全新的节点,between the ends of damaged and severed nerves. Or maybe even a spinal cord. Dont get me wrong -- this is exceptionally challenging and really hard work to do,不要误会--这非常具有挑战性,而且极其难操作,and we are not the only ones working on this. But we are the only ones using asparagus. Right now, weve got really promising pilot data. And were working with tissue engineers and neurosurgeons to find out whats actually possible. 201609/467872
