Luis, who is studying for a PhD in Architecture and Interaction Design, said he is fascinated with the idea of being able to see the hidden wireless networks which surround us. #39;I call the images ;spectres; because wireless networks remind me of ghosts,#39; he said. #39;They are there but you can#39;t see them with the human eye. #39;The fact we are becoming increasingly reliant on something that we can#39;t see intrigues me. I wanted to find a way to show the wireless which is around us and also to show how it changes.“我们越来越依赖于不可见的东西,这事儿激起了我的好奇。 Hernan created the photographs using a custom-made instrument designed to reveal them. It scans continuously for wireless networks, and transforms the signal strength to colour LEDs. The results are multi-coloured streaks of light which twirl and wrap in spaces, showing how they surround objects and people. Hernan has also created an app which can be downloaded for free, for Android devices called Kirlian, which allows people to see the strength of Wi-Fi around them. He said: #39;I would love other people to get involved and to create their own images using the app. #39;I used it as part of an exhibition of my work, where we hung mobile phones from the ceiling and it showed how signal strength was varying as people moved around the room.#39;“我将这个软件做为我的作品展的一部分。 /201406/307622

Microsoft agreed on Monday to buy the company behind Minecraft, the world-building computer game, for .5 billion in a cash deal meant to add the immensely popular title to its stock of content. Last week, Microsoft was reported to be in talks to buy the company to ensure that the games was available for its family of devices. As part of the deal, employees of Mojang, the Swedish developer that created Minecraft, will join Microsoft Studios, which aly publishes games like the blockbuster Halo. Yet Minecraft looks little like Halo and its Hollywood-level graphics. Its worlds look blocky, like pixelated Legos. But the gameplay — focused on building elaborate virtual structures — has drawn a huge and dedicated following around the world. Games remain one of the biggest categories of apps, including those for mobile devices. Adding one of the most popular offerings could help bolster Microsoft’s Windows series of devices, including phones and tablets. In a news release, Microsoft said that its cloud and mobile offerings would help add more sophisticated worlds, development tools and ways for players to connect with one another. “Gaming is a top activity spanning devices, from PCs and consoles to tablets and mobile, with billions of hours spent each year,” Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive, said in a statement. “Minecraft is more than a great game franchise — it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.”“游戏催生了大量活动,从PC和家用游戏主机,到平板电脑和手机,人们每年花数十亿小时在游戏上,”微软首席执行官萨蒂亚·纳德拉(Satya Nadella)在一份声明中说。 One person who will not stick around to see what changes lie in store for the game, however, is Minecraft’s creator, Markus Persson. Mr. Persson — better known by his gamer tag Notch — wrote in an unusually candid blog post exactly why he would leave Mojang after the closing of the deal, which is expected late this year. Mojang。Rather than engage in fist-bumping or writing a missive to users about how selling his baby will only expand Minecraft’s horizons, Mr. Persson sounded as if he were having a large tumor excised from his body. He described the pressures of being the figurehead of such a big and influential game as too much for him to bear. “I’ve become a symbol,” Mr. Persson wrote. “I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a C.E.O. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.”“我已经成为了一个符号,”佩尔松写道。 Mr. Persson and Mojang had repeatedly rebuffed takeover entreaties in the past, but by the time Microsoft made an initial approach about three months ago, the game developer was more willing to consider cashing out. He is expected to make nearly .8 billion from the deal. “Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life?” he wrote in a Twitter post on June 16.“有人想买我在Mojang的股份吗,好让我可以在生活中做别的事情?”6月16日,他在推特上写道。Taking the lead in the negotiations was Carl Manneh, Mojang’s chief executive, who will leave along with his fellow co-founders, Mr. Persson and Jakob Porser. Some of the most important objectives for the company, according to people briefed on the talks, were ensuring that the Minecraft community would be preserved and that younger developers at Mojang would have jobs after a deal. Mojang was advised by JPMorgan Chase. /201409/329398According to the News.ninemsn.com on February 9, a posted on YouTube shows a US man has created a helmet capable of shaving a person's head in a matter of seconds. The helmet device injects shaving cream and operates four razors simultaneously, and appears to provide a clean, tidy and safe haircut in 20 seconds. /201102/125693

GM's challenge - Survive and save DetroitNo city in America has been more entwined with the fortunes of a single industry as Detroit with autos. The nicknames "Motor City" and "Motown," coined years ago, have stuck for good reason. Most of the industry pioneers -- names like Wayne and Hupp, Packard and Maxwell -- have long since disappeared, and foreign automakers are expanding not in Michigan but farther south. Yet Detroit remains the home of the Big Three. In Detroit, GM is the biggest game in town. Even after Chrysler fled to a northern suburb and Ford (F, Fortune 500) retreated to its Dearborn, Mich., campus, GM doubled down on the city. In the mid-1990s it moved its headquarters to the city's most prominent landmark on the Detroit River, known appropriately as the Renaissance Center. After the investment of several hundred million dollars, GM's headquarters has become the centerpiece of the city's efforts to revive its downtown and develop its riverfront. General Motors and Fortune have grown up together too. As Time Inc. founder Henry Luce was creating the modern business magazine at the end of the 1920s, GM was passing Ford to become the world's largest automaker. In 1930, when -- Depression be damned -- Luce launched Fortune, GM showed its grit by introducing the first Cadillac with a 16-cylinder engine. When GM's legendary CEO Alfred P. Sloan published his landmark memoir, "My Years With General Motors," in 1963, the title page bore the name of his collaborator, a Fortune editor named John McDonald. With this issue, Fortune commences its contribution to Time Inc.'s "Assignment Detroit" series with a look at two sides of GM: its management under the new leadership of president and CEO Fritz Henderson, and its manufacturing, as seen in the Poletown plant, one of two factories still assembling cars within the Detroit city limits. Poletown, symbol of decades of strategic misdirection, represents the actions of an arrogant company that still believed, long after it had any reason to, that what was good for GM was good for the city of Detroit and the country. Henderson's strategy for GM is simple: to focus on the car business again. Past CEOs were distracted by corporate debt and legacy costs, work rules, and franchise laws. Now those concerns have been mostly eliminated, stripped out during the bankruptcy process, and Henderson can apply his energy where it is most needed. Henderson will be finding out what customers think by going out and talking to them, forcing his executive team to pay more attention to the competition, and applying more intellectual and financial capital to the creation of new products. Board chairman Ed Whitacre has given him his orders: GM needs to generate more revenue and more profit. There is no question where the buck stops. Now that GM has decided to focus on four brands -- Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC -- Henderson's challenge is to persuade customers to take a look at them. The new model to watch next year won't be the overpriced Chevy Volt but a small car called the Chevy Cruze. Since the 1960s GM has failed to build a small car that could compete with foreign brands. If it can't compete with the Cruze, it might as well throw in the towel. So far, reports on its design, fit, and finish are encouraging. Henderson's biggest challenge is to find a way to change GM's thinking. Bankruptcy notwithstanding, there remains a tendency to explain away shortcomings. GM could use some outside talent, but so far it has found none. Henderson promises to recruit managers from other companies but says government restrictions on compensation have prevented him from doing so. GM's CEO won't like to hear it, but he could learn a thing or two from Alan Mulally, his competitor across town at Ford. Mulally has identified a clear vision of the future, gotten his managers behind it, and created a no-excuses culture. Ford executives today are dealing with the world as it is, not as they wish it would be. Can Henderson do it? Yes, he can. I have never met an executive who was better prepared for his job. But can GM do it? There, I'm not so sure. With a few exceptions, there haven't been enough signs of fresh thinking or new ways to convince me that the new GM is a winner. All the ingredients are there, but they have to be successfully mobilized for GM to succeed. For the sake of Detroit, all of America should hope that it does. /200909/85183

Blythe Masters, a pioneer of credit derivatives, one of the products at the heart of the financial crisis, has resigned from JPMorgan Chase after more than two decades at the bank. Ms Masters, 45, was at the vanguard of the development of credit derivatives in the 1990s, credited with the creation of a new risk mitigation tool but after the crisis vilified as an architect of “weapons of mass destruction”.45岁的马斯特斯在上世纪90年代曾是开发信用衍生品的先驱,她因创造了一种新的风险缓解工具而闻名于世。 Her friends say it was a caricature: Ms Masters developed but did not invent the product and stopped working in the area years before derivatives on mortgage securities stoked the market meltdown in 2008, though she did later act as an industry advocate. The departure of one of the most prominent women on Wall Street was announced in an internal memo from Jamie Dimon, chief executive, and Daniel Pinto, head of the investment bank. It praised her “remarkable” career and said she was taking “some well-deserved time off [to] consider future opportunities”. Jes Staley, former head of investment banking at JPMorgan and now managing partner at BlueMountain Capital, said: “She is one of the few people that had the courage to defend the derivatives market in the financial crisis and she paid a price for it”. He added Ms Masters was “one of the most capable bankers that I have worked with”. She is leaving the bank she joined as an 18-year-old intern because of the reversal in fortunes of another project whose growth she championed: JPMorgan’s trading in physical commodities, which Ms Masters built over the past six years only to be told to sell it off. The business brought in billions of dollars of revenues but also investigations by regulators, including an allegation of market manipulation in the California power market that led to a 0m penalty last year from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. JPMorgan did not admit or deny a violation. The sense that regulators would keep targeting the business led to JPMorgan’s decision to sell the business to Mercuria, a Swiss-based trading house, according to people familiar with the matter. Ms Masters has decided not to go to Mercuria, according to one person familiar with the matter, but has not made up her mind what to do next. /201404/284541The US Army is dedicating millions of research dollars into discovering building helmets to allow soldiers to telepathically communicate with one another on the battlefield. The technology, which seems like something out of a science fiction novel, would use electrodes to pick up code words that soldiers were thinking. Those codewords would then be transmitted back to a computer where the soldier#39;s position and message-telling, for instance, that it is safe to progress towards a target- which would be transmitted to their peers in the field. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) was established in 1958 and was dedicated to expanding the Department of Defense technology usage, some of which included state-of-the-art, and top secret, research into the mind. Based largely out of University of California-Irvine, in conjunction with labs in Philadelphia and Maryland, scientists are trying to improve so-called #39;synthetic telepathy#39; so that it could be used in a battlefield. At this point, they have set their sights on 2017 as the year when their plan may turn into silent action. So far, 45 percent of the commands that are transmitted from one volunteer to another- like ;call in helicopter; or ;enemy ahead;- are correct. That statistic is expected to improve. According to a soldier ed in Stars and Stripes, the military newspaper, many of those people who will be the ones utilizing the technology are on board. Others, including civil rights activists, take the opposite view, bringing up concerns about a possible infringement on civil liberties if the technology were to be misused. /201204/177180Marks amp; Spencer has agreed to make the packaging of all of its toys gender neutral by spring 2014, after customers complained that it was marketing items according to stereotypes. Customers contacted Mamp;S to complain at a range of toys called ;Boy#39;s Stuff;, which included planes, cars, dinosaurs, racing cars, cat toys, a marble run and a pop-up fire station. The description on the latter said: ;This pop up fire station is perfect for little fire men everywhere;, while the description of a watch in the same range : ;The perfect wrist accessory no boy should be without,; and a joke book : ;Boys know the best jokes and here are 500 crackers to keep you ahead of the girls.;其中,弹出式消防站玩具的说明上写道:“这个弹出式消防站非常适合各地的小消防员”。 The Boy#39;s Stuff range will be rebranded to use a simple graphic logo, while the ;Little Miss Arty; range will become ;Poppy and Blue;, using character-based branding.“男孩玩具”区域已经重新挂牌,换成一个简单的图形标志,而“女孩艺术”区域被重命名为“波比和布鲁”并使用人物形象的标牌。Mamp;S told the Guardian it was aly in the process of updating its policy but this became public when it responded to a specific criticism on Twitter by Labour MP Stella Creasy. It Tweeted back: ;Hi Stella, we#39;ve listened to customer feedback and by spring next year all of our toys will be gender neutral. Mamp;S said in a statement: ;We offer a wide range of fun and educational toys, which are designed to appeal to children regardless of gender. We have listened carefully to feedback from our customers and by spring next year all of our toys will be gender neutral.;玛莎百货发表声明:“我们提供大量有趣而富有教育意义的玩具,为所有儿童的需求而设计而不针对性别。 Meanwhile, the number of shops organising their toy departments into separate sections for boys and girls has fallen by 60% in the past year, following pressure on retailers from shoppers and campaigners, it has been claimed. 60%。Campaign group Let Toys be Toys said reports from the high street suggested that a fifth of stores were still organising their toy sections by gender rather than genre, compared to half in the runup to Christmas 2012.“让玩具成为玩具”活动小组说,来自主要街道的调查报告显示,五分之一的店铺仍然以性别而不是风格为标准对玩具分类,而这一数据在2012年圣诞到来之际曾高达50%。The group, which started in November 2012, has been calling on retailers to end gender-stereotyping in toy departments which has seen some display play kitchens and colouring sets under ;girls; signs and science sets and doctor#39;s costumers under ;boys; signs.“让玩具成为玩具”成立于2012年十一月,旨在呼吁零售商停止玩具部门的性别成见,诸如在“女孩”的标示下摆上玩具厨房和涂色集,而科学装置和医生装则被归在“男孩”的标示下。 /201312/270374
