In the northwestern ed States, the city of Seattle requires its residents to separate food waste from the rest of their trash. The food gets recycled into compost for lawns, gardens and, soon, into electricity. Every day, at Cedar Grove Composting north of Seattle, truck after truck pulls into this huge warehouse to dump loads of food and yard waste. There's a nice mix of green waste and material. We actually have different seasons here in the tipping building," says Susan Thoman, business development director for Cedar Grove. "There's pumpkin season, that's the first of November after Halloween. We have Christmas tree season, which is obviously the first part of January after the holidays." According to Thoman, food waste and yard waste are currently all dumped in a pile together. Then they're mixed with microbes, ground up, and poured in long, covered rows to biodegrade for a month. The people who work at Cedar Grove talk about compost the way chefs talk about food. Thoman digs her hands into a rich, dark pile of the finished product. This is what it's all about, though, here. This is what those wonderful things we divert from the landfill turn into." Alternative energyNow Cedar Grove has a new recipe in mind for its food waste. Before turning banana peels and b crusts into compost, the company wants to use them to create alternative energy. 201011/118400But not everybody is a fan of Apples growing influence on the music world. iTunes almost single-handedly wiped out traditional music stores. Tower records declares bankruptcy. The national music chains and plus. There have been some holdouts to iTunes. I can understand their point. Why is my song worth the same as some, you know, Bavarian folk tune, right? Its not. This is pop music. Im Kid Rock. But the music industry is no match for Steve Jobs. Now defining itself as more than any single product, Apple drops the word ;computer; from its official corporate name. You just look at your Apple product, a little bit more than you would look at something else. You dont sit there with you remote control at home and just like ogle it and sort of just mentally feel it up. But you do with Apple products and you did with the iPod. 传统的2. folk a.

Itrsquo;s not clear why, exactly, heavy traffic could cause premature birth. Air pollution from car exhaust could have something to do with it. Some studies have found that women exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide were up to twenty-five percent more likely to have a preterm baby than women in areas with cleaner air. Itrsquo;s also possible that loud noise from highways and freeways could play a role by disturbing pregnant womenrsquo;s sleep. Losing sleep typically causes stress, which is linked to premature birth. Whatever the specific cause, these studies at the very least suggest that loud, heavy traffic, and pregnancy donrsquo;t mix. 164915

Lexington列克星敦The long road home回家的路还长着呢How Osama bin Laden's death, and life, have changed America奥巴马如何对待奥萨马本拉登之死,无形之中,已经影响了美国May 5th 2011 | from the print editionWHAT America needs, Sarah Palin is fond of saying, is a commander-in-chief, not a professor-in-chief. Like many other Republican critics of Barack Obama, the former governor of Alaska ought to be eating her words. Indeed, after the daring raid that killed Osama bin Laden, America has discovered that its commander-in-chief is one cool cat. The president issued the order for the attack on Friday April 29th and it was executed on the Sunday. In between, on the Saturday night, a relaxed Mr Obama gave a wisecracking speech at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner. Flashing his toothsome smile, he poked fun not only at Donald Trump, the presidential wannabe who had questioned whether the president was a real American, but also at himself for his professorial ways and tanking poll numbers. The joke now is on the critics of the president’s foreign policy. In one gloriously mistimed editorial, written just ahead and in ignorance of the raid on Abbottabad, Bill Kristol, editor of the conservative Weekly Standard, mocked Mr Obama for “leading from behind”. All the Republicans had to do, argued Mr Kristol, was to nominate “a real leader: a workhorse not a show horse; a steady hand not a flip-flopper; a profile in courage not in cleverness; a competent man or woman with strength and confidence in defence of liberty at home and abroad.” 201105/135082

The Great Mortgage Disappearing ActFirst Direct, which was the most competitive lender on the market, has stopped offering mortgages to new customers. As Sky's Business Correspondent Joel Hills reports, it is not the only lender pulling mortgage deals. It's the great mortgage disappearing act and it's happening online and on the high street. First Direct is not the first, but it's the most high-profile lender to close itself to new business all together. The bank which is owned by HS says the move is temporary,it's not had any trouble,it's simply been swamped by mortgage applications. It's little wonder there is a mortgage rush on these cheap deals that're becoming harder to find.Last summer,we had the luxury of 15,500 mortgages to choose from, one credit crunch later, and today there are less than one third of that number. In the last week alone,906 mortgages have been pulled by lenders,as are rated just under 200 deals everyday. This one is from Chuck Riocosta, who rates up yesterday. A court, again, same thing yesterday.Glen Morris is a mortgage broker,he tells me he's getting daily e-mails from lenders, hiking rates and withdrawing products. After years of plenty, they've suddently become picky.I believe there's only 100% product left, and we are expecting news of that to go anytime now, even a 95% loan-to-value mortgage now is tough to find.So people without a deposit are gonna find it very difficult in this market, also people with credit problems. The frustration for first-time buyers like Lian Jacab is that house prices are falling at a time when mortgages are getting more expensive, the trainee accountant still finds herself priced out."Plans for the future ,carry on saving, stay at home with Mom and Dad for a little bit longer."And tonight, another lender is pulling yet another cheap deal. The Cooperative has suspended its two-year mortgages due to excessive demand-- a sign that this vanishing act is beginning to unsettle borrowers.Joel Hills,Sky News 01/60846

Several thousand people gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square for another protest after mid-day prayers Friday, but the numbers were nowhere near the ‘million-man march’ some activists had called for, or the tens of thousands who came out last Friday.7月15日(星期五)中午的祈祷活动之后,几千人聚集在开罗塔里尔广场,也就是解放广场进行另一次抗议。 A small group marching around the Tahrir Square chanted, “We are not tired of protesting. Freedom is not free.” And referring to the former regime of ex-President Hosni Mubarak they said, “We have removed the head but the tail remains.” The chants reflect the feelings of the relatively small but dedicated group that continues to come to the square to push for faster reforms, especially open trials for former regime officials and police officers accused of killing demonstrators. In the center of the square, tents house several hundred people who have been involved in a week-long sit-in. They say they will stay until their demands are met. A few say they have been on a hunger strike for the past week. One of the hunger strikers argues with a senior opposition politician who has come to try to convince them to end the strike. Ossama al-Ghazali Harb, head of the Democratic Front, tells the man the hunger strikers have captured the attention of the nation and helped rekindle the protests, and he promises to carry their message to the ruling military council. 201107/145029。

World Health Assembly Discusses New Health Challenges世卫敦促各国预防甲型流感流行 The annual World Health Assembly has opened with delegates from 193 member countries discussing how to protect people from diseases such as the swine flu virus that is sping around the world. World Health Organization Director-General, Margaret Chan, says the world is facing multiple crises, on multiple fronts. And, these are occurring at a time when the global economic crisis is making it more difficult to maintain good health, especially in the developing world. The WHO Chief says the new Swine Flu A-H1N1 virus shows how health challenges are changing. The world today is more vulnerable to the adverse effects of an influenza pandemic than it was in 1968, when the last pandemic of the previous century began," said Margaret Chan. "The speed and volume of international travel have increased to an astonishing degree. As we are seeing right now with H1N1, any city with an international airport is at risk of an imported case." Dr. Chan says increased interdependence among nations creates a great potential for economic disruption. This means the gap between the haves and the have-nots will grow even larger than it aly has. Today, about 85 percent of the burden of chronic diseases is concentrated in low and middle income countries," she said. "The implications are obvious. The developing world has, by far, the largest pool of people at risk for severe and fatal H1N1 infections." Dr. Chan urges the international community to do everything it can to help developing countries from bearing the brunt of disease pandemics. And she says while the world is right to be concerned about a possible flu pandemic, it should not let these worries overshadow or interrupt other vital health programs. She says health ministers attending this week's Assembly should take the opportunity to respond to threats to their health systems. She says a priority is to finish the job of polio eradication. She says the global campaign that WHO started in 1988 is very close to achieving its goal of ridding the world of this terrible paralytic disease. 05/70324

2008 Asian markets outlookCNN's Andrew Stevens asks Edgar Chuan of Descartes Investment Management what the future holds for the Asian marketsNo, this is where everybody has been anticipated because when Goldman Sachs came out as a report almost two years ago talked about BRIC, explicitly, Brazil, Russia, India and China. And this four country because given the, I mean, the people and education level and the economic growth of this four country that definitely, you know, this four markets, everyone has anticipated them to be performing well.OK. On that basis then, 2008 we will see pretty much more of the same?Yes, I will say 2008 is gonna be pretty much the same and I think if actually we would talk about Asia's, I think maybe Vietnam has standed a very good chance to be performing very well as well.We are just looking at Vietnam that was a 28% compared with say India 30% to 40%, to Shanghai nearly 85%.So Vietnam underperforming at the moment why do you like it in 2008?Vietnam is underperforming is because of the width and the depth of the market because right now the entire, you know, stock exchange market capitalization is only about 20 billion dollars and given that they are still in a very primitive stage and there is a lot of room for growth. So once, you know, you will see more of the state-owned enterprises as well as the private, I will say, privately-owned company go on to be listed in Vietnam, you will be seeing a very different kind of market and also they are trying, the Vietnamese government is trying to improve the infrastructure of both exchanges in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.Looking at Shanghai and India, the two best performing markets in 2007, there was talk this year, a lot of talk that certainly Shanghai was overheating. It was a bubble forming, to a lesser degree, India as well getting too hot. But you are saying it's still gonna be very hot next year?Yes, because when you look at the liquidity of the market. There's still a lot of excess money or hot money is traveling around, you know, globally and when you look at the opportunities, this take for example, the US's subprime worries and probably that's gonna lead to some economic declines because the consumers are not gonna spend and Japan isn't enough room for that as well. And where are you gonna put your money, right? And given that India and China, the fundamentals are still there, the economic growth is still very strong and everyone is projecting at least 10% of growth of GDP next year. And given that, you know the fundamental plus, there are a lot of money out floating. So these two markets will definitely be performing very well next year.Do you think looking at the economic fundamentals of the stock market the people talk about though that these two markets are probably overvalued, they are probably in a bubble situation.I would say this is really way too early to say that bubble is forming because given that when you are in an emerging market, you tend to give them a little bit higher in terms of PE or PB ratio. That is because they will enjoy a better growth than the developed countries. It's just like sort of same kind of banks that in China you get 4.5 times PB, price book, but you won't be able to get that in the States because for Citibank probably about 2.5 times price book ratio. That's about it.Finally, how does a retail investor play a market like Shanghai or India, particularly Shanghai because it's so close to outside investors? You will be able to buy some ETF, exchange traded fund, and you are able to buy into some of the funds that is China-focused and I think that would be the best way for you to participate in the market but again, you will always have to look at any of your investment on the 12-month horizon. If you were just thinking about, you know, just like trading an individual stock punting the market, sometimes that is not gonna get you the return you are hoping for. stand a good chance (of) v. Like Sudan, the Eritrean regime has come under harsh criticism from Western human rights groups for repressive policies. Shortly after the ICC warrant was issued earlier this month, Eritrea invited President Bashir to the country in a show of solidarity. The court has urged all countries, including those like Eritrea that have not signed up to the ICC's Rome Statute, to arrest President Bashir if the opportunity arises. Sudan did not provide advance notice of the trip and offered few details. But Issaka Souaré, a legal researcher at South Africa's Institute for Security Studies in South Africa said there was little risk involved in the visit."Eritrea is not a state party to the Rome Statute," said Issaka Souaré. "There is nothing binding in the Rome Statute on non-signatories to apprehend someone against whom there is an arrest warrant. Given that he was officially invited by the president of Eritrea and given that Eritrea is not a state party, one could argue that there is no risk at all on President al-Bashir."More discussion has been generated by President Bashir's planned visit to Qatar at the end of the month to attend an Arab League summit. Most members of the League, including Qatar, are not members of the ICC, and the group has called for the arrest warrant to be removed. But the trip to Qatar would involve flying over international airspace, and the possibility that President Bashir's flight could be intercepted. Sudan's Committee of Islamic Scholars has urged the president not to attend, for fear of his safety, providing Mr. Bashir a possible way of saving face while backing out of the trip. But Souare downplays the threat the president would face."I think they may be exaggerating arguing that his plane might be intercepted," he said. "What do they fear? Someone bombing the plane or trying to down the plane in some other way? Given that Qatar is not a state party and that Qatar has invited the Sudanese president, and he would very likely be using his personal jet, I see no risk at all in him traveling there."The Arab League's secretary general, Amr Moussa, has said President Bashir will not be arrested if he attends the summit. 03/65617Apple beyond Steve Jobs The CEO is the heart and soul of Apple Inc. yet he's got a deep management bench from which to choose his eventual successor Apple is undoubtedly one of the most secretive company in the American, may be in the world. There are two secrets that people really want to know the answer to about the Apple right now.One is what is the status of Steve job's health. He had a treatable form of pancreatic cancer four years ago. He says he is got it beaten, but he isn't giving any more details. And he looks thin and gone, and that's got people concerned about his health. The second secret people want to know the answer too is who would replace Steve Jobs. If he would step down the CEO. The most logical candidate is the chief operating officer of Apple, an executive named \ Tim Cook. Not a lot is known about him, he is 48 years old. He is an operations expert. He spent many years at IBM, and He makes the chains run on time at Apple. He is health from fittness enough. He loves the cycle and hike and he is a big fan of Auburn football where he went to school. But it’s not a foregone conclusion that Cook would succeed Jobs. There are other prominent Apple executives who people talk about including Jonathan Cohnthe head of design, Ryan Janson the head of Apple retail stores. And Peter Oppenhemier the company's chief finance officer. None of those candidates however has the same combination of technical engineering chops and business acumen that Cook has.Of course it’s also possible the Apple board could go outside and get somebody completely outside of Apple, but remember before Steve Job's came back to Apple in 1997,the board had gone to an outsider, that didn't work out so well.200811/55958

My democracy will deliver," Mr. Zardari said. "The people of Pakistan stand with the people of the ed State and the people of Afghanistan. We stand with our brother Karzai and the people of Afghanistan against this common threat, this menace which I have called cancer." The opening event of what are to be two days of high-level talks included the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Pakistan and Afghanistan for the conclusion of a border trade and transit agreement by the end of this year - an accord under discussion for more than 40 years.

Britain is on the verge of constitutional upheaval英国正在宪法剧变的边缘THIS may seem an odd moment to make the claim, but Britain is a country in the grip of a modernising frenzy. The outside world may see an unvarying kingdom of royal weddings, golden carriages and clip-clopping Horse Guards, with a young prime minister drawn from the old Establishment. But strip away the pageantry, and David Cameron’s Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition is proposing radical changes to the constitutional order. A national referendum on May 5th and months of parliamentary wrangling lie ahead. But if all the changes being proposed by the coalition come to fruition, British democracy could look and feel very different by the next general election, set by the coalition for May 2015.5月5日全国范围的公民投票后是长达数月的议会辩论。 Depending on the outcome of the referendum, that general election may be held using a new voting system: supporters of change call it the biggest shake-up since votes for women in 1928. Voters are to be asked to choose between keeping the winner-takes-all system of first-past-the-post (FPTP) and moving to the alternative-vote (AV) method, in which voters rank candidates in numbered order of preference. Under AV, if no candidate wins more than 50% of voters’ first preferences, the least popular candidate is eliminated and the second preferences of those who voted for him are distributed. The process continues, redistributing third, fourth or lower preferences until someone crosses the 50% line. 201105/135029

I heard the story about how one monkey on an island figured out how to wash his food, and then other monkeys starting doing it too. Thatrsquo;s the true story of Imo the macaque monkey! In 1952 on the island of Koshima, a primatologist was leaving sweet potatoes on the shore for the monkeys to eat. One smart monkey, a one and a half year old named Imo, began washing the sand off her potatoes in a brook. You can imagine how much better this insight on her part made the potatoes taste! Next, Imorsquo;s playmate was observed washing potatoes. Then her mother, then another peer. In four years, three more of her relatives and four members of another macaque group were washing their food. The primatologist realized he was watching the way new ideas sp in society!

England will finally win the World Cup after 44 years of pain if City boffins are to be believed.European champions Spain will be runners-up with the Netherlands winning the third place play-off, according to J.P. Morgan quantitative analysts who issued their findings on Tuesday ahead of the World Cup (June 11-July 11) kick-off.They predict world number one team Brazil will fall short in South Africa because of a tougher route through to the final than their main rivals. The quantitative analysts at J.P.Morgan used information such as FIFA ranking, historical results and its J.P.Morgan Team Strength Indicator to come up with a mathematical model to predict match results, they explained. However, they warned "this report should be taken with a pinch of salt" and that it is an exercise to "light-heartedly explain quantitative techniques and demystify the typical quant framework."The analysts usually use these kind of mathematical models to help predict stock market winners with millions of dollars hanging on their calculations.England last won football's biggest prize in 1966 when the Beatles topped the charts with Yellow Submarine and Harold Wilson was Prime Minister. In the latest official FIFA rankings, England were in eighth position and Spain were second.201006/105762

The Mediterranean地中海The devil and the deep blue sea魔鬼和那湾蔚蓝深邃的海History’s most important sea 最富有历史意义的海May 5th 2011 | from the print edition The Great Sea: A Human History of the Mediterranean. By David Abulafia. Allen Lane; 783 pages; pound;30. To be published in America in September by Oxford University Press; .95. DAVID ABULAFIA’S marvellous history of the Mediterranean is an excellent corrective to oversimplified views of geopolitics. Some people home in on distinctive landmasses, an island such as Crete or a clear shape like Iberia or Anatolia, and assume these have long formed a single cultural or political space, embracing coast and interior, and different from places “across the water”. At the other extreme, romantic types regard a lake or sea as a friendly space where ideas, expertise and merchandise are traded to perpetual mutual advantage. The second view is the more likely. True, the various ports and shores of the Mediterranean influenced one another (if war is regarded as a form of influence), but the impact of hinterlands and of distant powers, like Russia and America, was also huge. 201105/135680
