We are in full agreement with the points raised in your letter我们非常同意你在信件中提到的那些问题 常用英语口语人需要有一种宗教信仰使他的生活有意义我希望我也能有这样的信仰,但我的任何信念总会充满困惑和保留看法然而,我写诗就是努力发掘生活的意义偶尔,我用诗歌表现自己的经历和感受,从中也明白了我不曾意识到自己已经懂得的道理,对我来说,诗歌创作的冲动表现出来的,不是因为不系统而不太真实的东西…… I Wish I Could believe by C. Day Lewis "The best lack all conviction,While the worst are full of passionate intesity." Those two lines of Yeats me sum up the matter as it stands today when the very currency of belief seems debased. I was brought up in the Christian church. Later I believed a while that communism offered the best hope this world. I acknowledge the need belief, but I cannot get how through the ages great faiths have been vitiated by fanaticism and dogmatism, by intolerance and cruelty, by the intellectual dishonesty, the folly, the crankiness or the opportunism of their adherents. Have I no faith at all, then? Faith is the thing at the core of you, the sediment that's left when hopes and illusions are drained away. The thing which you make any sacrifice because without it you would be nothing - a mere walking shadow. I know what my own core is. I would in the last resort sacrifice any human relationship, any way of living to the search truth which produces my poem. I know there are heavy odds against any poem I write surviving after my death. I realize that writing poetry may seem the most preposterously useless thing a man can be doing today. Yet it is just at such times of crisis that each man discovers or rediscovers what he values most. My poet's instinct to make something comes out most strongly then, enabling me to use fear, doubt, even despair as creative stimuli. In doing so, I feel my kinship with humanity, with the common man who carries on doing his job till the bomb falls or the sea closes over him. Carries on because of his belief, however inarticulate, that this is the best thing he can do. But the poet is luckier than the layman, his job is always a vacation. Indeed, it's so like a religious vacation that he may feel little need a religious faith, but because it is always trying to get past the trivial and the transient or to reveal these as images of the essential and the permanent, poetry is at least a kind of spiritual activity. Men need a religious belief to make sense out of life. I wish I had such a belief myself, but any creed of mine would be honeycombed with confusions and reservations. Yet when I write a poem I am trying to make sense out of life. And just now and then my experience composes and transmutes itself into a poem which tells me something I didn't know I knew. So me the compulsion of poetry is the sign of a belief, not the less real being unmulated ... a belief that men must enjoy life, explore life, enhance life. Each as best he can. And that I shall do these things best through the practice of poetry. 97

Stick to your special talentsYou were born with a special talent. It may be to sing, write, teach, paint, mentor, preach, defend or befriend. You have something special to offer the world, something you can do better than ,000 others. You must keep learning and trying new things to find your special talent. The world needs your gift. Be aware that even a special talent can go stale if you don’t keep using and honing it. Endeavor to keep your talents and all your skills up to date.An advantage isn’t an advantage unless you use it. Find ways to use your advantages to set and reach your goals. Likewise, you should recognize and then try to minimize the impact of your limitations. Remember that not all advantages are transferable. Just because you are talented in one area doesn’t mean that you will be talented at everything you try. The successful real estate investor can easily lose her money opening a restaurant. Stick to your advantages and don’t stray from them without reasoned justification. 998

Cohesion-tension Theory Atmospheric pressure can support a column of water up to meters high. But plants can move water much higher; the sequoia tree can pump water to its very top more than 0 meters above the ground. Until the end of the nineteenth century, the movement of water in trees and other tall plants was a mystery. Some botanists hypothesized that the living cells of plants acted as pumps. But many experiments demonstrated that the stems of plants in which all the cells are killed can still move water to appreciable heights. Other explanations the movement of water in plants have been based on root pressure, a push on the water from the roots at the bottom of the plant. But root pressure is not nearly great enough to push water to the tops of tall trees. Furthermore, the conifers, which are among the tallest trees, have unusually low root pressures. If water is not pumped to the top of a tall tree, and if it is not pushed to the top of a tall tree, then we may ask how does it get there? According to the currently accepted cohesion-tension theory, water is pulled there. The pull on a rising column of water in a plant results from the evaporation of water at the top of the plant. As water is lost from the surface of the leaves, a negative pressure, or tension, is created. The evaporated water is replaced by water moving from inside the plant in unbroken columns that extend from the top of a plant to its roots. The same ces that create surface tension in any sample of water are responsible the maintenance of these unbroken columns of water. When water is confined in tubes of very small bore, the ces of cohesion (the attraction between water molecules) are so great that the strength of a column of water compares with the strength of a steel wire of the same diameter. This cohesive strength permits columns of water to be pulled to great heights without being broken. 88

L: Yeah, I'm pretty hungry too, and smelling all the delicious food here is only making it worse LH: L: Well, I guess we could do that ... but if the food is really bad, you're going to be kicking yourself later LH: 你说我要kick myself? L: Actually, if you really regret something stupid that you did earlier, you can say that you are kicking yourself LH: 哦, 原来to kick oneself不是自己踢自己,而是为自己做的蠢事感到后悔你是说,要是我不看菜单瞎点,八成得后悔 L: Right! Here is another example. I spent ,000 on a new computer, but I was kicking myself a week later when it went on sale half the price LH: L: I really love spicy food, but it always makes my stomach hurt. If I eat it, I know I'm going to be kicking myself later LH: L: Yeah, those are really tasty too, but they're so fattening! I know I'm going to be kicking myself at the gym tomorrow LH: Larry, L: Yeah, I'm going to be kicking myself if we spend a lot of money on dinner but the food isn't very good LH: L: Great! Let's go and sit down ****** LH: L: Hmm ... do you want to go see a movie? I think that the new Tom Cruise action movie starts playing at 9 PM LH: L: Well, the theater is only minutes away, so we have some wiggle room LH: Wiggle room? L: When you say that you have some wiggle room, that means that you have some flexibility, or room to spare LH: L: Right! Here is another example. My apartment lease ends next week, but I have some wiggle room because my landlord said I could stay an extra month if I need to LH: L: Yeah, I that the movie cost more than the movie studio thought it would. By the end, there was no wiggle room in the budget LH: 啊? L: Well ... I probably can ... but I will have to check my schedule LH: L: Well, I just want to keep a little wiggle room in case an even better action movie comes out next week! L: You know, there is some wiggle room. Anything between percent and percent will be fine LH: L: Even though we have some extra time, we probably shouldn't take the risk. We're going to be kicking ourselves if eating ice cream makes us late to the movie LH:

A: Jean, can you bring me the newspaper?B: Sorry?(↗)Jean 用升调说 Sorry,其意思是 "I didn't hear you. Could you say that again, please?"A: Jean, can you bring me the newspaper?B: Sorry.(↙)Jean 用降调说 Sorry,显然其意思是拒绝帮助或无能为力可见,如果对语调知识缺乏了解,就会无法确定说话人的态度、感情、口吻、意图等,所以今天我们就来对语调问题做个说明吧一、一句话中音调的相对高度所包含的意义众所周知,人们在兴奋、惊讶或感情激动时说话的语调就高,而在相反的情况下,语调则低,在同一个场合中,如果一个人的语调明显高于另一个,或明显低于另一个,以此就可以推断出该说话人的意思及态度这里我们要着重谈谈一句话中语调相对高度的不同所包含的意义一句话中的语调波峰一般都是句子的重音所在,通过语调波峰,我们就可以了解说话人的意思如人们读 "I live in the city." M: Linda looked very tired these days.W: She looked OK to me(↗).Q: What does the woman think of Linda?(A) She saw Linda and me.(B) Linda said she was fine.(C) She looked up the word me.(D) She considered Linda was all right. 使用疑问词 who, which, what, how, when, where, why 的特殊疑问句可以用降调也可以用升调,但含义是不同的如:A: Mr. Smith thinks we ought to get the money in hand first.B: Who?(↗)A: Mr. Smith.B用升调说 Who,表示听不清对方谈话中的某一部分,要求对方再重复那一部分A: We'd like to have someone to say a word at the beginning to welcome the group.B: Who?(↙)A: We thought that you or Dr. Johnson might do it.B用降调说 Who,其意思是问,对方想让谁在开场时致欢迎词. A: You will finish the work, won't you?(↙)B: Yes, I will.A用降调提问,意思是:I know you will finish the work, but I want you to confirm it.A: You will finish the work, won't you?(↗)B: Yes, I will.(或 No, I won't. A: Are you Mr. Blake?B: Yes.(↙)A: Room twenty-six. A: Are you Mr. Blake?B: Yes?(↗)A: Ah, the secretary would like a word with you. But why do you ask?" 或是 "Yes. But who want to know?" M: How long shall we stay at the Grand Canyon?W: A day?(↗)Q: What does the woman mean?(A) We shall stay at the Grand Canyon one day.(B) Shall we stay at the Grand Canyon one day?(C) To stay at the Grand Canyon one day is too short.(D) To stay at the Grand Canyon one day is enough. She lent him her car.(↙)(用以陈述事实)She lent him her car?(↗)(表示惊奇、的怀疑,含有 "Did she really lend her car to him ?" M: Wasn't Sam's speech great!(↙)W: Are you serious?Q: What does the man say about Sam's speech?(A) Sam's speech wasn't great, was it?(B) Sam's speech was great, wasn't it?(C) Sam gave a serious speech.(D) Sam was not serious. W: Haven't you got anything better to do?(↗)M: Ok, Mum, I'll turn off the TV and begin to do my homework.

First, farmers selected the oyster bed, cleared the bottom of old shells and other debris, then scattered clean shells about. Next, they "planted" fertilized oyster eggs, which within two or three weeks hatched into larvae. The larvae drifted until they attached themselves to the clean shells on the bottom. There they remained and in time grew into baby oysters called seed or spat. The spat grew larger by drawing in seawater from which they derived microscopic ps of food. Bee long, farmers gathered the baby oysters, transplanted them in other waters to speed up their growth, then transplanted them once more into another body of water to fatten them up. Until recently the supply of wild oysters and those crudely farmed were more than enough to satisfy people's needs. But today the delectable seafood is no longer available in abundance. The problem has become so serious that some oyster beds have vanished entirely. tunately, as far back as the early 1900's marine biologists realized that if new measures were not taken, oysters would become extinct or at best a luxury food. So they set up well-equipped hatcheries and went to work. But they did not have the proper equipment or the skill to handle the eggs. They did not know when, what, and how to feed the larvae. And they knew little about the predators that attack and eat baby oysters by the millions. They failed, but they doggedly kept at it. Finally, in the 190's a significant breakthrough was made. The marine biologists discovered that by raising the temperature of the water, they could induce oysters to spawn not only in the summer but also in the fall, winter, and spring. Later they developed a technique feeding the larvae and rearing them to spat. Going still further, they succeeded in breeding new strains that were resistant to diseases, grew faster and larger, and flourished in water of different salinities and temperatures. In addition, the cultivated oysters tasted better! 601

The Wedding DanceThe hand that clasps mine is not that of the child I can still remember, but that of the man he has become. From that hand to his face to the smile he beams at me,he is his father in days gone by.We move gracefully across the floor as his young bride looks on.My new daughter.Oh,how the years have passed. It seems I didn't even notice. One day,I held a squalling infant in my exhausted arms and counted tiny pink fingers and toes. The next,I'm no longer the most important woman in his life.An eftless spin1) and he's taking me across the floor with a flare) like his father's.I wonder if he's looking down on us at this moment as my son' s eyes sparkle3) with his mischief).Suddenly,I'm bent back-ward and laughing like a girl half my age,my young rogue leaning over me and guests applauding. He kisses my cheek and spins me upright a gain. The regretful tears of the past threaten my eyes. No,they are not regretful tears.I have no regrets where this boy--this man--is concerned. He has been, and always will be,my pure joy.Time cannot wipe away the sadness and heartache, but there was never regret.Heartache comes with having children as it does with being alive. If my son is all he wants to be,I have no regrets. As the music slows, his mood seems to waver.Knowing that if I see any of what I'm feeling in his eyes I will surely cry,I move into his arms and rest my head on his strong shoulder.A hush has descended on the entire room;not even the babies are fussing. The gentle piano guides us around the floor, passed faces that have always been near, and new ones destined the same.Their smiles bring one to my face as I realize this is not a day tears. The hand against my back gives me a squeeze. It is a most subtle5) gesture to let me know my new daughter's turn to care him has come.It is not a day tears, but they threaten nonetheless6).I sigh and touch his smooth cheek, seeing the face of a baby, child, teen, and man.Is this day so difficult all mothers?I can't help wondering. As the music switches with ease to the one he chose to dance to with his bride,I turn and find her shy face with my other hand.I can't speak to either, but I know that my heart is in my eyes as each receives my kiss.Walking to the edge of the floor,I suddenly realize I do have one regret today.I regret that my husband is not here to hold my hand.by Melissa K.Beynon 9Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love.
