Honey bees add billions of dollars in value to around one hundred thirty crops in the ed States. But since the nineteen eighties, researchers have been concerned about the health of these valuable pollinators.Worries grew after the winter of two thousand six. Some pollination services reported losses of anywhere from thirty to ninety percent of their hives. The beekeepers did not find dead adult bees as they often do after winter. Instead, the bees were gone. Experts gave a name to this mysterious situation: colony collapse disorder. A report in Agricultural Research magazine, from the Department of Agriculture, takes a fresh look at C.C.D. It says the disorder is truly a serious problem. But it says there were enough honey bees to provide all the agricultural pollination needed last year.Still, beekeepers reported losing about thirty-five percent of their hives in the fall and winter of two thousand seven. It two thousand six, it was thirty-one percent. The ed States has almost two and one-half million managed beehives. Experts from the Agriculture Department and the Apiary Inspectors of America did a study involving about one-fifth of them. One finding was that beekeepers who found no dead adult bees were more likely to have the most severe losses. Also, a virus called I.A.P.V., for Israeli acute paralysis virus, was present in almost half the colonies studied. But researchers say they do not know if this virus causes a colony to collapse. They say the lack of affected bees to examine makes it difficult to know exactly what the new disorder is. Losses in honey bee populations can result from a number of causes. A big problem, for example, is the varroa mite, a deadly parasite. And experts keep looking for other answers for the current situation.Scientists at the University of Virginia recently reported that air pollution may prevent bees from finding flowers to pollinate. They think ozone in the air is keeping bees and other pollinators from smelling the flowers. Bees feed on nectar and pollen from flowers. Jose Fuentes and his team at Virginia studied how far the scent of flowers travels with the wind. Before the eighteen hundreds, they say, it was more than one thousand two hundred meters. Now, they say, the scent can travel only about three hundred meters at best. Their study is in the journal Atmospheric Environment.03/65616吉安县额头除皱多少钱 This is East Africa, the Great Rift Valley, a land in constant upheaval . The flamingos and baboons here at Lake Bogoria live in harmony. They share this landscape and all it has to offer. They may not be compatible. But in the midst of Bogoria's bounty, they can afford to be indifferent. In July, after a successful breeding season, nearly four million flamingos gather along the scenes of the Great Rift Valley. They carve the inlets and crowd the local residents. The baboons who live here all year round can't help but take notice of the sheer numbers of new arrivers. Some baboons have never seen these many flamingos before, and some of them don't know how to behave. There are so many birds at Bogoria that they trip over each other in order to escape. Baboons aren't meat eaters, but this is something unusual for baboons. Choosing between fruits and flesh is a simple matter for these meat eaters.Until now, such an orchestrated attack on flamingos has rarely been witnessed or recorded. The graceful wading birds become a buffet of pink feathers and crimson flesh. The young have discovered a new taste and they like it. Perhaps this is nature's coldly indifferent way of restoring balance.upheaval1. Mass unemployment may lead to social upheaval. [C]From the hill he looked down on the peaceful landscape. 2.风景画,山水画[C];风景绘画(或摄影)[U]She preferred a good landscape to a portrait. Don't take any notice of others' comments. witness1.目击I witnessed the traffic accident. The two servants witnessed Mr. Smith's will. The year 1849 witnessed a great war in Hungary. 07/79328Lucky escape for all but one in Colombia plane crashA Boeing 737 crash-landed Monday on a Colombian resort island during a lightning storm, scattering passengers across the runway as it split in three, but somehow only one passenger died.A 73-year-old woman suffered a heart attack and died in hospital, but officials said it was a "miracle" there were no more fatalities among the 130 survivors, most of whom suffered some kind of injury. The plane was struck by lightning 80 meters (250 feet) above the tarmac at Gustavo Rojas Pinilla airport on the Caribbean island of San Andres, aviation officials said, but the cause of the crash was still under investigation.Passengers were "literally scattered over the end of the runway," a police statement said. The authorities later put the number of injured at more than 120, five of them seriously. There were at least 16 foreigners on board the Boeing 737-300, including six French, four Brazilians, four Americans and two Costa Ricans."We all felt the plane was arriving very, very quickly on the tarmac," 28-year-old Virginie Giroux, one of the French passengers said."We did not feel the contact with the ground. We just saw everything flying, everything bursting in the plane."Orlando Paez Baron, director of civil security from Colombia's national police, said the pilot had briefly lost control of the aircraft but showed skill in keeping the plane on the runway. The plane, belonging to Colombia's Aires airline, left Bogota shortly after midnight and crashed in San Andres in conditions of reduced visibility about two hours later, according to air traffic controllers.San Andres's governor Pedro Gallardo said it was only good fortune that prevented there being more casualties among the 131 people on board."We thank God for the miracle granted to this archipelago," he told national radio. The Bush administration's comments come amid further signs that the number of Americans looking for work is growing. As a rule, White House spokespeople strenuously avoid economic predictions, particularly when the nation's financial outlook is dim. So it was all the more remarkable that President Bush's press secretary, Dana Perino, all but stated that the ed States could be in a recession. We are in for a rocky road on the employment front, and expect our GDP [gross domestic product] number next week not to be a good one," she said. "And the next quarter could probably be tough, as well." Two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth meet the technical definition of a recession. Earlier in the day, the Labor Department reported another jump in the number of people filing for government unemployment benefits. The news came as a wide variety of U.S. companies - from Internet firms to investment houses to auto manufacturers - announced cuts in their workforces. Many of America's best-known corporations have recently announced disappointing earnings that point to a broad economic slowdown. On Capitol Hill, former U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said the ed States is facing a "once-in-a-century tsunami" of tight credit and housing woes. He predicted the economy will get worse before it gets better. Perino did not challenge Greenspan's assessment, saying current economic conditions make it all the more important that the financial rescue package President Bush signed into law earlier this month be implemented as quickly as possible. I do not forecast from here [the podium], but looking at reality and how long it is going to take for people to return this country to job growth, it could be a while," she said. "The president knows that we are in for a rough ride, which is why he has asked us to work everyday to try to make sure that we are doing everything we can to pull us out of this slowdown." In February, when the first signs of economic weakness were emerging, Congress passed an economic stimulus plan consisting mainly of rebate checks to American taxpayers. Asked about the prospects of rapidly enacting a second stimulus package, Perino noted that Congress will not be in full session until after the November elections. In an unprecedented response to a domestic terrorist attack, Indian military forces have taken over the battle against gunmen who plunged Mumbai, a city of 18 million, into confusion. Hooda, the commanding officer of Maharashtra state, cautioned reporters not to speculate on how long it would take for troops to end the siege by the heavily-armed gunmen. Our effort is to ensure that we bring back all people who are inside safe and also capture or eliminate the terrorists violence," he said. Special rangers of an anti-hijacking squad, who were flown into Mumbai, surrounded Nariman House, a residential and office building serving as the headquarters of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish outreach group. But this strike is far different than the wave of bombings, blamed on Muslim extremists or, occasionally ultra-right wing Hindus, which have mainly targeted working class markets. This attack focused on locations frequented by the elite and the gunmen made a deliberate effort to take hostage foreigners, especially Americans, Britons and Israelis.
