Seventy million years ago, a great inland sea disappeared and the Rocky Mountains emerged from the seafloor. Sixty million years ago, they reached their peak height, twice what it is today. Then for millions of years, the Rockies slowly eroded away to half their original height until 3 million years ago, another dramatic chapter in their story began that would transform them into the Mountains we know today.Geologist and photographer Bob Anderson takes to the air. He is looking for clues that will tell him how the Mountains have evolved. First he flies over Boulder Canyon in the Colorado Rockies. It is an area that has remained almost unchanged over millions of years.;So this is Boulder Canyon we are flying up right now. And you can see how the river has in size maybe a few hundred feet down into otherwise relatively rolling terrain.;The mountain peaks that existed on the young Rocky Mountains were rounded off as rivers and streams eroded the rock.;Its this rolling terrain that the landscape look like in the aftermath of the mountain building event that ended about 50 million years ago.;But as Anderson climbs higher to Longs Peak in the Rocky Mountain National Park, the terrain changes. Instead of rolling hills, there are rugged mountains with steep and jagged cliffs. Its evidence that another force has been at work. The most famous of these cliffs is the Diamond. Named for its shape, its a vertical wall with a sheer 900 foot drop. The summit about 45,000 square feet is the same size as a football field.;Well, we are flying beside, ur, Longs Peak, one of the biggest climbing challenges in the Rockies. For a century, its been a climbing Mecca. Its a gorgeous, intact piece of rock.;This awesome wall is the most difficult climb in the whole of the Rockies. And since it was officially open to climbers in 1960, has claimed over 50 lives. Afghan President Hamid Karzai says he has spoken with U.S. President-elect Barack Obama about the effort to improve security in Afghanistan next year. Meanwhile, U.S. military in Afghanistan says Afghan and coalition forces have killed 17 Taliban insurgents in air strikes on a "known insurgent safe haven" in southern Kandahar province. The conversation is the first between the two leaders since Mr. Obama won the presidential election. President Karzai's office released a statement Sunday saying Mr. Obama pledged to increase the U.S. commitment to fighting terrorism and improving security in the region. Mr. Obama has long advocated boosting U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan by drawing down U.S. forces in Iraq. The top U.S. and NATO Commander in Afghanistan, General David McKiernan, said last week he does not currently have enough troops to provide security in parts of the country. He urged Mr. Obama to speed the deployment of as many as 20,000 additional troops after he takes office. The first additional U.S. brigade, numbering between 3,500 and four-thousand troops, is scheduled to arrive in January. U.S. Spokesman Colonel Greg Julian says those forces are headed to eastern Afghanistan, an area the military calls R.C. East, which has seen a surge in Taliban attacks this year. They are going to move into areas that are currently not covered. We do not have enough forces to cover all of R.C. East, so they will be separated into areas where there are no existing forces," Julian said. The harsh Afghan winter usually brings a lull in fighting, but U.S. and NATO forces say they plan to keep pressure on Taliban fighters during the coming months. Commanders say they are re-training all Afghan border police in eastern Afghanistan and building 165 new posts along the so-called Durand Line that serves as a de-facto border. NATO Spokesman Brigadier General Richard Blanchette says forces are also improving cooperation with Pakistani forces through a joint-mission called Operation Lionheart that targets militants in Afghanistan's Kunar province and Pakistan's Bajaur tribal region. In this clearing operation, Pakistani forces in Pakistan and Afghan and ISAF forces in Afghan are coordinating operations along the border applying pressure to any insurgents attempting to cross into or out of Bajaur," Blanchette said. During his presidential campaign, president-elect Obama criticized President Karzai's government, saying it should work harder, and address corruption and the massive opium trade. Following Mr. Obama's election win, Mr. Karzai also had strong words for the president-elect, demanding he end Afghan civilian casualties and focus on militant sanctuaries outside Afghanistan. Sunday's statement from President Karzai's office did not say if the two discussed the criticisms. 200811/57043President Barack Obama on Tuesday visited the U.S. commonwealth of Puerto Rico. “Buenas tardes!”With a greeting of “Good afternoon” in Spanish, President Obama began his five-hour visit to Puerto Rico and offered support for next year’s vote on the island’s future. Puerto Ricans will have the choice of becoming an independent nation, becoming America’s 51st state or remaining a U.S. territory. “And when the people of Puerto Rico make a clear decision, my administration will stand by you," said President Obama. The president’s visit to Puerto Rico fulfills a promise he made in his 2008 campaign. Puerto Ricans cannot vote in U.S. general elections, but more Puerto Ricans live on the U.S. mainland than on the island. Many are in Florida and North Carolina, states the president will need to win in next year’s election. 201106/140765Former Bush Secretary of State Powell Endorses Obama鲍威尔持奥巴马当总统 Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell says he is backing Democrat Barack Obama for president. Powell made the announcement during a nationally broadcast television interview. Powell says Barack Obama has the ability to transform America and American politics. He has met the standard of being a successful president, being an exceptional president. I think he is a transformational figure. He is a new generation coming onto the world stage, onto the American stage. And for that reason, I will be voting for Senator Barack Obama," he said. It was an important high-profile endorsement for Obama from a fellow African-American who served first as the nation's top military officer and later as its chief diplomat. Powell, a retired general, was the secretary of state during President George W. Bush's first term. And while he has never held a prominent political post, he has served in several Republican administrations. Appearing on N's Meet the Press, Powell said both Barack Obama and his opponent, Republican John McCain, could handle the job of commander-in-chief. But he indicated he believes Obama would be better able to tackle the nation's economic problems and improve its standing abroad. I think the number one issue the [new] president is going to have to deal with is the economy - that is what the American people are worried about," added Powell. "And frankly, it is not just an American problem, it is an international problem." Powell said he has been friends with John McCain for many years. But he said he is disappointed in the tone of the McCain campaign, and the choice of Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee. He was asked if race played a role in his decision to back Senator Obama."If I had only that in mind, I could have done this six, eight, 10 months ago. I really have been going back and forth between somebody I have the highest respect regard for - John McCain - and somebody I was getting to know, Barack Obama," Powell said. "And it was only in the last couple of months that I settled on this."Senator Obama welcomed the news at a campaign rally in North Carolina - a state where Republicans are traditionally strong. Today, I am beyond humbled. I am deeply honored to have the support of General Colin Powell" 奥巴马说:“今天,我感到不胜惭愧。 Senator McCain downplayed the Powell announcement when asked about it on the Fox News Sunday television program. I have always admired and respected General Powell. We are long-time friends. This does not come as a surprise. And I am also very pleased to have the endorsement of four former secretaries of state - Secretaries Baker, Kissinger, Eagleburger and Haig," he said. With just over two weeks left until Election Day, nationwide polls put Obama in the lead. But the race is tightening, and John McCain says he is still confident of victory. I have been on enough campaigns, my friend, to sense enthusiasm and momentum and we have got it," said McCain. For his part, Senator Obama is warning his supporters against being overconfident. He is spending his weekend campaigning in states that are usually strong for Republicans - such as North Carolina and Missouri.200810/53326Driving into Tripoli is to drive into a ghost city. It looks like a set for a Hollywood apocalypse film. Instead of a bustling seaside capital of 1.5 million people, we drove Thursday past kilometer and kilometer of shuttered metal storefronts. We arrived to find a city stripped of people. As shots rang in the distance, only an occasional car or pickup truck raced down glass-strewn streets. Entering from the west, we met checkpoints every block. Tense rebels dressed in tee-shirts, shorts and sandals manned roadblocks improvised from mattresses, even school desks. Heavily armed, they were men from the mountains, unable to direct us to our hotel. Fifteen minutes after we left one beachfront hotel, a firefight erupted outside. After four days of fighting in the capital, the rebels control about three-quarters of the city. But opposition ranges from single snipers to formations of entrenched Gadhafi loyalists. 201108/151094

Red Eye Two Year Anniversary"Red Eye": intentionaly stupid, secretly smart So “Red Eye” viewer Beth Navarra wrote to me yesterday, saying “God, did I ever hate your show when it first came out. But it’s like smoking. It makes you sick at first, but then you are hooked." You are my cigarette.Well, thanks, Beth. Can I say to you that you are my cigarette too. In fact, all “Red Eye” viewers are my cigarettes for they offer me a measure of pleasure in a sometimes difficult world and they give me cancer. But I am especially touched because Beth wrote to me now on our two-year anniversary. True, it’s been two years since “Red Eye” aired its first crappy episode and it was crappy. See when “Red Eye” started, Beth was right to hate it because despite its hidden charms, it was a horror show. Andy, Bill and myself had no idea what we were doing. I came from publishing and I hired Bill simply because he had photos of me. Worse, I found Andy through comments he left on my blogs. I mean, you have to admit that’s kind of stupid. But even though we were incompetent and scared, we showed up everyday, did the job. We listened and we learned, screwed up and succeeded. But thanks to people like Beth, who gave the show a second chance. “Red Eye” was able to grow like a deadly toe fungus, offering you the kind of unbridled truth, disguised in silly pleasure that you only find in prison. But as simple as that concept sounds, “Red Eye” is tough to describe. It is intentionally stupid but secretly smart, a strategy designed to confuse bitter liberals, media hacks and angry activists. We gauged our success on turning groups into sputtering messes whether it be GLAAD, Media Matters or whether armpit-sniffing blogs. I call this strategy the “Dean Wormer Effect”, named after the hapless dude from Animal House. For so long in movies and TV,non-liberals were always portrayed as stiff joyless type like Dean Wormer, the stereotype went unquestioned. But it was totally dishonest. My goal of “Red Eye” was to reverse it and to turn the so-called edgy lefties into Dean Wormers, because that’s really what they are. P.C. crybabies determined to stamp out all of the fun in the world. In short, jackasses. And it worked. As you close in on our 500th show, we now have more viewers than ever and an awesome arsenal of great guests. The show continues to expand and thanks to the folks of FOXNEWS, it is our hope that we continue to grow. If anything just to keep Bill off the streets and me off the meth. But just remember like Beth says: Becoming a “Red Eye” fan takes three stages: first revulsion, then confusion, finally, obsession. No, there is a fourth stage which involves fans sending me nude pictures, but I’ll go into that aspect at a later date. And if you disagree with me, then you sir are worse than Hitler. 02/62336

Dealing with stress Hong Kong, has been shell-shocked by a technical recession. How are they coping? CNN's Eunice Yoon reports. “Free hugs, come on” When you are feeling down, it's good to find comfort in your friend, or perhaps even a stranger. This group in Hong Kong is giving out hugs to help people in this financial capital feel better during the global economic crisis. People needs care, and love, and we really want to set share our love and care. Hong Kong is aly a stressed-out fast-paced city. But now this place like New York and London is grappling with the worldwide credit crunch, and its economy is in a technical recession. People are getting to a point of feeling quite anxious. The biggest source of their anxiety, job security. People having difficult in falling asleep, or they may find themselves even at work, they are unable to concentrate, they would talk about within the company this tension, they feel the other departments, other team may come and steal their clients. Emotions are only running high in the office, in Hong Kong, hundreds took to the streets, after losing a chock of their savings in bonds of the now bankrupt of US investment firm Lemon Brothers. Social services organizations like Carritars are reaching out to those suffering. A group recently set up a government-funded counseling hotline, and in the first month received over a thousand calls. They call because they don't know what to do next after losing their savings. They find it really difficult to accept such a harsh reality and change the way of living. So what are the best ways to manage stress in these uncertain times? Exercise, lay off the alcohol, get some rest, and try not to play too many mind games with yourself. They would try to guess, guess the situation, looking at the, you know, the supervisor, you know, having a meeting with a couple of people or thinking “oh, my God”. You know, it is one that, to, delivering the bad news, or its next one would be me, importantly it’s to slow down. And spend time with family, or maybe some new-found friends. Even if that too, might give you a little bit of stress. “Free hug” Yoner Sien, CNN, HongKong. 200812/57781
