They found that exposure to low oxygen depletes stores of a red-blood-cell protein called eENT1. Richard was coming up the pathway. Deplete消耗例:...substances that deplete the ozone layer.… Thats a good thing. Because now other substances that protect your body against low oxygen are free to rapidly accumulate and help the body adapt. Substance1. Its questionable whether anything of substance has been achieved. There is no substance in any of these allegations. But heres the kicker—once the eENT1 protein goes away, it doesn’t come back.Meaning red blood cells kind of remember their altitude exposure. 陷阱:隐藏的或棘手的情况;隐患:“The kicker is that the relationship of guide and seeker gets all mixed up with a confusing male-female attachment”(Gail Sheehy)“问题难就难在导游和探险者卷入了令人不明的男女感情关系中”(盖尔#8226;希伊)And that means if you hit the mountains again soon enough, you can acclimate faster than you did the first time. The findings are in the journal Nature Communications. He admits to having hit the lowest point in his life. It hit me that I had a choice. There is one caveat. ;In humans the red blood cell lifespan is 120 days.;值得注意,人类红细胞的生命周期是120天Caveat警告; 提醒例:There was one caveat: he was not to enter into a merger or otherwise weaken the Roche familys control of the firm. A 15-year lifespan is not uncommon for a dog.15年的寿命对来说并非罕见。Study author Yang Xia, a biochemist with the UT Health Science Center in Houston. ;So the longer you stay at sea level before you re-climb to high altitude, then such memory will gradually disappear.“这篇研究的作者是休士顿健康中心的生化科学家Yang Xia;他说,在重新爬高山的时候,待在海平面的时间越长,那么这种血液记忆能力就逐渐消失 So unless youre a frequent mountain climber—theres really no shortcut to acclimatization. Then again, theres no shortcut to the summit, either. Fame can be a shortcut to love and money. There are any number of ways to move or copy icons or create shortcuts in Windows. 201704/504125We like to think of romantic feelings as spontaneous and indescribable things that come from the heart. But its actually your brain running a complex series of calculations within a matter of seconds thats responsible for determining attraction. Doesnt sound quite as poetic, does it? But just because the calculations are happening in your brain doesnt mean those warm, fuzzy feelings are all in your head. In fact, all five of your senses play a role, each able to vote for, or veto, a budding attraction. The eyes are the first components in attraction. Many visual beauty standards vary between cultures and eras, and signs of youth, fertility and good health,不同的文化和时代,对视觉美的标准都有所不同而作为年轻、活力、健康的标志,such as long lustrous hair, or smooth, scar-free skin, are almost always in demand because theyre associated with reproductive fitness. And when the eyes spot something they like, our instinct is to move closer so the other senses can investigate. The noses contribution to romance is more than noticing perfume or cologne. Its able to pick up on natural chemical signals known as pheromones. These not only convey important physical or genetic information about their source它们不仅传递着气味发出者重要的生理或基因信息,but are able to activate a physiological or behavioral response in the recipient. In one study, a group of women at different points in their ovulation cycles wore the same T-shirts for three nights. After male volunteers were randomly assigned to smell either one of the worn shirts,之后,男性志愿者被随机抽取去闻一件穿过的T恤,or a new unworn one, saliva samples showed an increase in testosterone in those who had smelled a shirt worn by an ovulating woman. Such a testosterone boost may give a man the nudge to pursue a woman he might not have otherwise noticed. A womans nose is particularly attuned to MHC molecules, which are used to fight disease. In this case, opposites attract. When a study asked women to smell T-shirts that had been worn by different men,另一个研究要求女性来闻不同男性穿过的T恤they preferred the odors of those whose MHC molecules differed from theirs. This makes sense. Genes that result in a greater variety of immunities may give offspring a major survival advantage. Our ears also determine attraction. Men prefer females with high-pitched, breathy voices, and wide formant spacing, correlated with smaller body size. While women prefer low-pitched voices with a narrow formant spacing that suggest a larger body size. And not surprisingly, touch turns out to be crucial for romance. In this experiment, not realizing the study had begun, participants were asked to briefly hold the coffee, either hot or iced. Later, the participants a story about a hypothetical person, and were asked to rate their personality. Those who had held the hot cup of coffee perceived the person in the story as happier,拿着热咖啡的人认为故事里的人快乐、more social, more generous and better-natured than those who had held the cup of iced coffee,具有社会性、慷慨、天性善良,而拿了冷咖啡的人who rated the person as cold, stoic, and unaffectionate. If a potential mate has managed to pass all these tests, theres still one more:即便一个潜在的伴侣已经成功通过以上所有的测试,这里还有最后一关:the infamous first kiss, a rich and complex exchange of tactile and chemical cues,初吻,初吻是一次内涵丰富而寓意复杂的触觉和化学信息的交换,such as the smell of ones breath, and the taste of their mouth. This magical moment is so critical that a majority of men and women have reported losing their attraction to someone after a bad first kiss. Once attraction is confirmed, your bloodstream is flooded with norepinephrine, activating your fight or flight system. Your heart beats faster, your pupils dilate, and your body releases glucose for additional energy,你的心跳加速,你的瞳孔扩大,你的身体也释放出葡萄糖来提供更多的能量,not because youre in danger but because your body is telling you that something important is happening. To help you focus, norepinephrine creates a sort of tunnel vision, blocking out surrounding distractions,为了帮助你专心肾上腺素,创造出一种管状视力防止注意力涣散,possibly even warping your sense of time, and enhancing your memory. This might explain why people never forget their first kiss. The idea of so much of our attraction being influenced by chemicals and evolutionary biology may seem cold and scientific rather than romantic,我们的大部分吸引力被化学和进化生物学深深影响这个观点,也许看上去冷酷又理性,一点也不浪漫but the next time you see someone you like, try to appreciate how your entire body is playing matchmaker但是下次你见到一个喜欢的人的时候,试试让你的整个身体都参与配对过程,to decide if that beautiful stranger is right for you.

First, European regulators have tried harder to preserve competition between existing carriers. The EU has been willing to block mergers, such as a proposed tie-up between Ryanair and Aer Lingus, and to prevent airlines from building monopoly positions at airports. Not so in America: at 40 of its 100 biggest hubs, a single carrier now accounts for more than half of capacity. That pushes up prices. The merger of American and US Airways in 2013 increased American’s market share at Philadelphia’s airport to 77%. Fares rose from 4% below the national average in 2013 to 11% above after the merger. preserve v.维持 (maintain), 保护(protect)- The laws are intended to help preserve our environment.block v.阻止propose v.提议tie-up n. 中心account for 占有.....capacity n.容量Second, Europe has made it easier for foreigners to boost competition by entering new markets. There are no ownership limits at all between European countries; and the EU lets airlines with a non-EU owner that has a stake of up to 49% fly anywhere within the bloc. America caps foreign ownership at 25%. Foreign joint ventures, such as Virgin America (which was acquired by Alaska Air Group last year) struggle to take off. boost v. Third, Europe has also encouraged competition between different airports and their main operators. Breaking up the ownership of London’s biggest three airports has saved passengers #163;420m (8m) in fares since , according to ICF International, a consultancy. In contrast, most American cities have only one airport, many of them publicly owned. consultancy n. Some of Europe’s advantages are hard to replicate. Distances between big cities are shorter, making road and rail transport serious rivals. Yet that is all the more reason for America to promote competition in the sky. America’s regulators should loosen the cap on foreign ownership, take away slots from incumbents and promote the use of secondary airports to give new entrants a leg-up. If that doesn’t yield dividends, regulators should consider breaking up the big airlines. Allowing competition to wither was a huge mistake. It should be rectified. replicate v. 减弱,枯萎- The plants withered and died.rectify v.
