Bush, Medvedev Agree on Iran, Not Missile Defense美俄承诺携手说伊朗停止浓缩铀 U.S. President George Bush and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev say they are united in trying to convince Iran to stop enriching uranium, but remain divided over American plans for a missile defense system in Eastern Europe. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Group of Eight leading industrialized nations. This was their first meeting since President Medvedev took office, earlier this year. President Bush says the new Russian leader is a smart guy who is comfortable, confident and says what he means. Although there are fewer than 200 days left in the Bush presidency, the American leader says he is certain that he and President Medvedev can work together for the common good. I reminded him that, yes, I'm leaving, but not until six months, and I am sprinting to the finish. So we can get a lot done together," said Mr. Bush. "There are a lot of important issues, like Iran. There is an issue where Russia and the ed States have worked closely, in the past, and we will continue to work closely to convince the regime to give up its desire to enrich uranium." The ed States and many of its allies believe Iran wants to build nuclear weapons. Iran says it is enriching uranium solely for the peaceful civilian purpose of generating electricity. President Medvedev says the leaders also agreed to continue working together to ensure that North Korea dismantles its nuclear weapons program. But the Russian leader continues to oppose U.S. plans for a missile defense system in Eastern Europe. President Medvedev says he and Mr. Bush have differences over American plans to base a radar station in the Czech Republic and as many as ten interceptor missiles in Poland. The Bush administration says those missiles are meant to guard against attack from Iran and are no threat to Moscow, because they are no match for the Russian missile arsenal. President Medvedev says he and Mr. Bush also discussed relations with Georgia. The ed States wants the former Soviet republic to join NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Russia is backing separatists in the breakaway Georgian republics, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. President Medvedev says he will try to intensify an aly-good dialogue in the remaining months of the Bush Administration and is positive he can build on U.S./Russia relations with the next American leader. 200807/43633

We have reasons to suspect, based on recent high resolution photography of the surface, that there may be a subsurface ocean there. And where we find water and where we find the right mix of organics, there is the possibility for life. So we have to entertain the idea then that Europa could provide in this subsurface ocean environment, a habitat that would be clement for life and where life could have originated. "I don't know whether we'll find life beyond single cell. And when I talk about life, I want to be very, very clear. Single cell life would be an unbelievable find. And any higher level, I just don't know, I just don't know. But I doubt that we'll find a human species. " When our spacecraft eventually penetrated Europa's icy sheets, they might find scenes like this, an undersea world where life prospers without sunlight or oxygen like our own deep ocean thermal beds. And beyond our own solar system, there is always the seductive possibility that an intelligent group of beings like ourselves exists somewhere. After all, our sun is one of billions of stars that shine in the universe, a universe that contains all the elements found in life on Earth. A distant star could be the sun of another civilization. Could aliens have paid us a visit aly ? Maybe eons ago? "It's always possible that there is something we haven't recognized that has been left here maybe a long time ago by alien visitation. But in the absence of presenting me with that evidence, I see no reason to, to believe this. I really think it's such an expensive exercise to physically travel from one star system to another. I can't imagine the motivation of any alien species that would do it. " Humankind has explored the solar system, but we lack the technology to send men or robotic missions to another planetary system. But we've certainly left evidence of our own existance. The trail of debris from our space missions like Hansel and Gretel's bcrumbs in the forest may one day mark the way for an alien group looking for us. "Life probably does exist elsewhere in the universe, probably not sufficiently, frequently in the universe for us ever to be likely to meet it. So that would be my guess is that life is present elsewhere in the universe, but is probably so spaced-out that we may never know about it. " Out there, way out there, in other galaxies, what is the likelihood? The president of the SETI Institute has developed a complicated equation to actually figure the odds. It's called the Drake Equation. It's based upon things we do know about the universe, and other things we can make educated guesses about, things like how often new stars form, how many stars have planets, how many planets have life, the chance of that life developing intelligence, the chances that intelligence will lead to technology.words in this passageclement:describes weather which is pleasant or not severe:温和的,温暖的(气候等)例:It's very clement for the time of year.Hansel and Gretel:a fairy tale, for more information, Drake Equation: 200808/46529

Security forces in Pakistan have begun an operation against pro-Taliban militants in a tribal region bordering Afghanistan and serving as a major route for trade and supplies to U.S-led foreign forces based there. The offensive has provoked an al-Qaida-linked self-proclaimed commander of the Pakistani Taliban to suspend peace talks with the government. Officials say paramilitary forces are leading the offensive in the Khyber tribal region and have destroyed key militant bases without any significant resistance. They say that most of the militants have retreated to mountains close to the Afghan border. The government began the crackdown following increased sightings of Taliban militants in parts of the nearby city of Peshawar, just two hours drive from the Pakistani capital. In a major extremist action earlier this month in the northwestern city, suspected Taliban fighters briefly kidnapped some 16 members of the minority Christian community. There were also reports of militants warning traders against and music business. Regional police chief, Malik Naveed Khan, tells VOA that criminal gangs were behind the kidnapping and other incidents but, as he puts it, media blew them out of proportion. He says the operation in the adjoining Khyber tribal region is meant to punish tribal criminals responsible for these attacks. The police chief says security forces are focusing on the town of Bara, which borders Peshawar. There were only some incursions from the tribal gangs in which unfortunately some Christians were kidnapped who were immediately released within ten hours," he explained. "And after that we strengthened our positions on the [city] borders and after that no such incident has taken place. The government has launched an operation in Bara against these miscreants, and they have successfully pushed them back and they have taken successful action against them." Residents say that paramilitary soldiers have set up bunkers in areas of Peshawar close to the scene of military action and patrolled the streets in vehicles mounted with machine guns. Saturday's anti-militant operation in the northwestern border region of Khyber marks the first major military action the new Pakistani government headed by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has launched. Speaking to reporters by telephone from his stronghold in the South Waziristan tribal region, self-proclaimed commander of Pakistani Taliban, Baitullah Mehsud, demanded the government immediately halt the security operation. The militant leader says he is suspending peace talks with the government and his fighters will retaliate until the offensive is stopped. Prime Minister Gilani started the peace dialogue with militants through tribal elders several months ago to try to end militancy and violence in tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan. Commanders of the U.S.-led coalition forces and Afghan authorities have long maintained the Pakistani border regions are being used by Taliban and al-Qaida militants for attacks in Afghanistan. They have criticized the government's peace talks, saying such deals will lead to more attacks on Afghan and foreign forces. 200806/43022
