ONE of the oddest things about Homo sapiens is that he is alone. Though storytellers have filled the world with imaginary hominids-from woodland pixies to mountain giants-no sign of the real thing has ever been seen. But that was not true in the past. As recently as 40,000 years ago there were three other species of human on Earth: Neanderthals in Europe, the ;hobbits; of Flores, in Indonesia, and a recently discovered and still mysterious group of creatures called the Denisovans, who lived in Central Asia. And now there is evidence that similar diversity existed earlier in human history, a little under 2m years ago, in Africa. This evidence, just published in Nature, has been provided by a team led by Meave Leakey of the Turkana Basin Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr Leakey is a member of an illustrious palaeontological clan. Her husband, Richard, discovered in 1967 that the area around Lake Turkana is a good place to look for human fossils and made many important finds there; Richard#39;s parents, Louis and Mary, had earlier been responsible for showing the same was true of Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania; and in 1999 Dr Leakey herself found a new species of hominid, called Kenyanthropus platyops. At 3.5m years old Kenyanthropus predates Homo, the genus to which modern humans belong. Her latest discoveries, however, add to that genus, too. The problem with studying humanity#39;s fossil record is that it is so sparse: a jawbone here; a braincase there. Often, it is difficult to know if different bones have come from the same species or not. Even multiple examples of the same type of bone can mislead. What looks like two species might actually be the male and the female of one. Such confusion has bedevilled the interpretation of the human fossils found near Lake Turkana. Some palaeontologists see a single, variable species called Homo habilis. Others add a second, Homo rudolfensis. The new fossils found by Dr Leakey and her team (which includes a third Leakey generation in the form of her daughter, Louise) may, however, help clear up what is going on. One of the new specimens, known as KMN-ER 62000, has a face like the type specimen of Homo rudolfensis (the fossil that defines the species, if species it turns out to be), though it seems to be from an adolescent, whereas the type specimen is an adult. Crucially, 62000 has a reasonably well-preserved upper jaw, which the type specimen lacks. A computer reconstruction (see diagram) suggests this upper jaw meshes well with the second of Dr Leakey#39;s discoveries, a lower jaw (KMN-ER 60000). She is not suggesting they are from the same individual, since they are of different ages, but they seem to come from the same species, namely Homo rudolfensis. Equally significantly, a different computer reconstruction shows that the upper jaw of 62000 does not match another famous fossil from the area, known as KMN-ER 1802. This was found in 1973 and had previously been thought likely to be the lower jaw of rudolfensis. What 1802 actually is, is now obscure. It is too different from what this chain of reasoning suggests was the shape of Homo rudolfensis to be explained by sexual dimorphism, unless the sexes differed in this species in ways not seen in any other primate. But its previous attribution was made because it does not look much like Homo habilis either. It seems then that at least two, and possibly three species of Homo were stalking the east-African savannah a little under 2m years ago: habilis, rudolfensis and something as yet unnamed. The intertwining history of the human family and the Leakey family has just become even more complicated. After Sam lost the wrestling match he was black and blue。 My sisters are so successful. As the Millionaire Matchmaker, Patti Stanger knows a thing or two about how to win the heart of a wealthy man. Now the relationship guru, 50, has revealed her style tips for women keen to secure that second date. She explains why curly-haired women - with the exception of Andie McDowell - should always straighten their hair and why the Rachel Zoe boho look will never be a winner when it comes to bagging a man. She told Today.com: #39;Men who are wealthy like straight hair, they like to run their hands through it, not get tangled in there like it does with curls. And honestly, very few women have perfect curls. Unless you’re Andie McDowell, the curls just look messy.#39;她告诉今天网说:“富翁们喜欢直发,他们喜欢手指穿过顺直秀发的感觉,而不喜欢被卷发缠住。 She added, rather controversially, that red hair was a dating faux pas too. She revealed, #39;The only men who like redheads are Irish.#39;还说——这一点颇有争议——红头发也是约会大忌。 When it comes to fashion, boho is a no-no, as Ms Stanger believes clothes should be fitted。 She continued: #39;No woman should be walking around in boho. It might look great on Rachel Zoe, but we all don’t have her body. How are you going to wear a tent dress and expect to get laid?#39;她说道:“女人就不应该穿着波西米亚风格的衣走来走去。 She cited Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian as women who understood how to dress for their body types, explaining that girls with great legs should bring out the miniskirt, while one with a swan neck, shouldn#39;t hide it in a turtleneck。 Nor should a girl overaccessorise, as the reality star believes too much jewellery makes a woman look high-maintenance. She added that a man is also unlikely to know whether your costume baubles are real or fake。 She explained: #39;I always say, ;Don’t wear your diamonds to a date, or he has nothing to buy you.;#39;她解释说:“我总说,别戴着钻石去约会,不然他要买什么送给你呢?”In terms of colour, black, red and jewel tones like sapphire blue and emerald green are in, while pumpkins and yellows are out, Ms Stanger said. Prints are also off-limits。 For the best possible dating wardrobe, she advises shopping with a hot straight guy rather than gay or female friends。 #39;He’ll know what will get you laid,#39; she said, #39;The first step toward a relationship is making him want you.#39;“他知道怎样才能把男人骗上床,”她说,“建立起关系的第一步就是让他对你产生欲望。”

Most women will have the occasional moan about the length of their legs, the size of their waist or the shape of their bottom. But it seems Pippa Middleton and her peers might find less to grumble about than most – this year, at least. Women feel their sexiest at the age of 28, according to a survey. Miss Middleton, millionairess Tamara Ecclestone and actress Mila Kunis are all at the magic age for embracing their sex appeal, according to the research. Although they may feel most sexy at 28, a woman#39;s confidence doesn#39;t peak until she is 32 - with supportive friends and family acting as the biggest boost to their self-belief. The findings come from a new study by Lil-Lets which focused on British women#39;s attitudes towards being female. Researchers found that most women are happy with the shape of their bum and boobs and the size of their hips and waist. In fact, three quarters of British women said they would not change their body shape if they were given the opportunity. The body part women are most proud of is their eyes, with 23 percent feeling that they are their best physical attribute. Perhaps the thrilling spectacle of the Olympics kept you away from your portfolio. Or the no-less-engrossing public split of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes made you forget about your 401(k). Maybe it was the languid summer, William Shatner#39;s return as Priceline#39;s #39;negotiator#39; or the struggles of the Red Sox and Arsenal. Whatever the reason, here is a quick way to get reacquainted with recent stock-market history: Slide open your iPhone, check your Facebook page and you are done. That#39;s right. The last few months in the world of equities can be summed up in the opposing fortunes of Apple Inc. and Facebook Inc. One is sitting atop the corporate world, having just been crowned the largest-ever U.S. company by market capitalization. (There is an asterisk, but more on that later.) The other is struggling with a share price that has nearly halved since a messy initial public offering in May. The gap between the values placed by investors on Apple and Facebook - around 1 billion and billion, respectively - is large enough to fit the economy of South Africa. But the distance between the yin and the yang of the U.S. stock market is more telling than that and offers three insights into investors#39; current thinking. First, pervasive uncertainty and ultralow interest rates are prompting the market to look at the long term. By ascribing such a large value to Apple, investors are betting on the company being alive and well for a long time. This isn#39;t just a gut reaction but a belief in Apple#39;s continued ability to generate profits. Low rates help this process by effectively reducing the value of money invested today - think of the meager interest you get from your bank - and increasing the importance of future returns. #39;What we are seeing with Apple#39;s rise and Facebook fall is a long-term story,#39; says Frank Partnoy, a professor of finance and law at the University of San Diego, whose latest book, #39;Wait,#39; extols the merits of thinking before acting. #39;People are looking at the two business models and saying: #39;Apple is going to be around and Facebook might or might not be around.#39;#39; 圣迭戈大学(University of San Diego)金融与法律教授弗兰克#8226;帕特诺伊(Frank Partnoy)说,苹果崛起与Facebook衰落体现的是一个长期概念;人们看着这两种商业模式说,苹果会活下去,Facebook可能会活下去,也可能活不下去。他的最新力作《等待:延迟的艺术与科学》(Wait: The Art and Science of Delay)赞美了三思而后行的价值。 If the thought of Facebook disappearing sounds preposterous, glance, if you will, at the scrap heap of once-hot technology companies - from Netscape Communications Inc. to Myspace (formerly owned by The Wall Street Journal#39;s parent company, News Corp.) - or the army of severely wounded firms such as Nokia Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co. and Research In Motion Ltd. Apple could go the same way, but investors clearly don#39;t think so, for reasons including a top-notch brand, a strong patent position (as Samsung Electronics Co. just found out), its cash pile and its record of innovation and productivity. On average, Apple#39;s employees generate 64% more revenue than Facebook#39;s workers. 64%。 The second message concerns the companies#39; management teams, which are both led by rookie chief executives. The difference between Tim Cook and Mark Zuckerberg, however, is that the former is succeeding a legend while the latter has been hailed as a legend in the making. So far, the market has been unequivocal: Since Steve Jobs#39;s death, Apple#39;s share price has risen 78%. Since Mr. Zuckerberg became CEO of a public company, Facebook#39;s shares are down 49%. 49%。 Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a management professor at Yale, believes the pre-IPO hype surrounding Facebook may have clouded its executives#39; judgement. #39;There was a grandiosity about the Facebook#39;s management team that was problematic,#39; he told me. Mr. Sonnenfeld, an expert on how companies and executives can bounce back from serious setbacks, believes Mr. Zuckerberg shouldn#39;t pull his hoodie over his eyes. #39;Going into denial mode would only get employees and investors more anxious,#39; he said. Facebook declined to comment. Apple didn#39;t respond to a request for comment. The third issue is whether Apple#39;s record value and Facebook#39;s stock plunge should be seen as #39;sell#39; and #39;buy#39; signs, respectively, as per Warren Buffett#39;s famous aphorism about being greedy when others are fearful and vice-versa. I would point to two sets of numbers. First, once inflation is taken into account, Apple is smaller than Microsoft Corp., General Electric Co. and two other tech giants at their peaks. Optimists argue that is because Apple has room to expand, while the pessimists counter that it underlines fears of a slowdown in growth once the products developed in Mr. Jobs#39;s #39;skunk works#39; run out. The other data point is the price/earnings ratio: Apple is trading at less than 13 times next year#39;s estimated earnings, while Facebook is at around 30 times. Despite its reputation for #39;irrational exuberance#39; and short-termism, the market appears remarkably cool and long-sighted in judging the prospects of two era-defining technology giants.
