POLITICAL revolutionaries turn the world upside down. Scientific ones more often turn it inside out. And that, almost literally, is happening to the idea of what, biologically speaking, a human being is. The traditional view is that a human body is a collection of 10 trillion cells which are themselves the products of 23,000 genes. If the revolutionaries are correct, these numbers radically underestimate the truth. For in the nooks and crannies of every human being, and especially in his or her guts, dwells the microbiome: 100 trillion bacteria of several hundred species bearing 3m non-human genes. The biological Robespierres believe these should count, too; that humans are not single organisms, but superorganisms made up of lots of smaller organisms working together. It might sound perverse to claim bacterial cells and genes as part of the body, but the revolutionary case is a good one. For the bugs are neither parasites nor passengers. They are, rather, fully paid-up members of a community of which the human ;host; is but a single (if dominating) member. This view is increasingly popular: the world#39;s leading scientific journals, Nature and Science, have both reviewed it extensively in recent months. It is also important: it will help the science and practice of medicine. All in this together齐聚一堂The microbiome does many jobs in exchange for the raw materials and shelter its host provides. One is to feed people more than 10% of their daily calories. These are derived from plant carbohydrates that human enzymes are unable to break down. And not just plant carbohydrates. Mother#39;s milk contains carbohydrates called glycans which human enzymes cannot digest, but bacterial ones can. This alone shows how closely host and microbiome have co-evolved over the years. But digestion is not the only nutritional service provided. The microbiome also makes vitamins, notably B2, B12 and folic acid. It is, moreover, capable of adjusting its output to its host#39;s needs and diet. The microbiomes of babies make more folic acid than do those of adults. And microbiomes in vitamin-hungry places like Malawi and rural Venezuela turn out more of these chemicals than do those in the guts of North Americans. The microbiome also maintains the host#39;s health by keeping hostile interlopers at bay. An alien bug that causes diarrhoea, for instance, is as much an enemy of the microbiome as of the host. Both have an interest in zapping it. And both contribute to the task. Host and microbiome, then, are allies. But there is more to it than that. For the latest research shows their physiologies are linked in ways which make the idea of a human superorganism more than just a rhetorical flourish. These links are most visible when they go wrong. A disrupted microbiome has been associated with a lengthening list of problems: obesity and its opposite, malnutrition; diabetes (both type-1 and type-2); atherosclerosis and heart disease; multiple sclerosis; asthma and eczema; liver disease; numerous diseases of the intestines, including bowel cancer; and autism. The details are often obscure, but in some cases it looks as if bugs are making molecules that help regulate the activities of human cells. If these signals go wrong, disease is the consequence. This matters because it suggests doctors have been looking in the wrong place for explanations of these diseases. It also suggests a whole new avenue for treatment. If an upset microbiome causes illness, settling it down might effect a cure. Yogurt companies and health-food fanatics have been banging this drum for years. And in the case of at least one malady, irritable-bowel syndrome, they are right. So-called probiotics, a mixture of about half a dozen bacterial species found in yogurt, do act to calm this condition. But there is little evidence that consuming probiotics has the tonic effect on healthy people that certain adverts suggest. A handful of doctors are taking a more fundamental approach to another microbiome-related disease, infection with Clostridium difficile. This bacterium, which causes life-threatening distension of the gut in some people who have been treated with antibiotics and thus had their microbiomes disrupted, is a bane of hospitals. It kills 14,000 people a year in America alone. But recent experiments have shown it can be eliminated by introducing, as an enema, the faeces of a healthy individual. ;Stool transplants; are a pretty crude approach, to be sure, but the crucial point is that microbes are much easier to manipulate than human cells. For all the talk of superorganisms (and despite the yuck factor of what is being moved from one body to another), transplanting a microbiome is far easier than transplanting a heart or a kidney. /201208/195859

Peter joined the army when he was eighteen, and for several months he was taught how to be a good soldier. He did quite well in everything except shooting. One day he and his friends were practicing their shooting, and all of them were doing quite well except Peter. After he had shot at the target nine times and had not hit it once, the officer who was trying to teach the young soldiers to shoot said, You#39;re quite hopeless, Peter! Don#39;t waste your last bullet too! Go behind that wall and shoot yourself with it! Peter felt ashamed. He went behind the wall, and a few seconds later the officer and the other young soldiers heard the sound of a shot.Heavens! The officer said. Has that silly man really shot himself? He ran behind the wall anxiously, but Peter was all right. I#39;m sorry, sir, he said, but I missed again. /201306/242564

The deal last week by Shuanghui, China#39;s largest pork producer, to buy U.S. pork company Smithfield at a big premium shows how much Chinese are willing to pay for safe food. After a spate of food scandals, it is no surprise that consumers in China are hugely concerned about food safety. David Laris, a chef and creator of several high-end restaurants in Shanghai, reckons that if a family of four in Shanghai eats just organic food, the grocery bill would be about 0 a week. #39;At home, we spend too much money buying food; there is no shortcut financially, #39; he said. But industry insiders, doctors and consumers say there are ways to reduce the risks of eating food produced in China without going over budget. Mr. Laris says he can#39;t run a profitable restaurant selling all organic food, so he uses a combination of imported food and carefully sourced local ingredients. It is ironic for a country that has a goal of moving people from farms to cities that some city dwellers now say they are growing their own vegetables and rice, and making their own b and yogurt. China Resources Group#39;s Wu Feng Butchers, a distributor of mainland beef and pork in Hong Kong, now is also serving its home market with export-quality products as demand grows. Oil from restaurant waste bins and gutters are often packaged and resold as cooking oil after some rudimentary reprocessing. When her family eats out, they order pizzas, because that is less likely to use local oil. Milk for children is one area where most people won#39;t compromise, so they buy imported dairy products. The country#39;s dairy industry hasn#39;t recovered from a 2008 scandal in which an estimated 300, 000 babies were sickened and six were killed by tainted powdered-milk formula. Foreign brands of baby formulas can sell for up to twice as much as domestic brands. But they often use nonfat milk powder and add vegetable oil, which may be harder for babies to digest. A lot of domestic brands now use imported raw ingredients, so the price gap hardly looks justifiable for budget-conscious consumers. Rice is another staple that Chinese consume in large quantities. Last month, the government reported that nearly half the samples of rice in Guangzhou bore cadmium above permissible levels news that struck a nerve across China. Consumers may be better off buying foreign rice, despite the cost. Imported Thai rice in Shanghai, at per kilogram, is almost 50% more expensive than the price in Hong Kong. 50%。Buy a water purifier. They range from simple attach-to-the-faucet models to more-elaborate filtering systems. But even the expensive models are far cheaper than bottled water and are effective in removing much of the pollutants from the water. Find a number of brands that you trust, and rotate among them. Don#39;t buy all your eggs from the same basket, even if it is a well-trusted Western brand. In 2011, some Wal-Mart stores in China were accused by officials in Chongqing of mislabeling regular pork as #39;organic.#39; The incident led to the temporary closure of 13 stores and a fine of 3.65 million yuan (6, 000). Since then, Wal-Mart has overhauled management at its stores in Chongqing and implemented a food-safety compliance system in the company#39;s stores across the nation. Big brands aren#39;t necessarily better. #39;You may want to drink cow milk for 11 months and buffalo milk for a month, and have some quail eggs instead of just chicken eggs, #39; said Shaun Rein, managing director of China Market Research. Shuanghui#39;s big pig deal wasn#39;t an accident. Some of the worst problems with food in China from dead pigs floating in a river in Shanghai to fox and rat meat disguised as beef and lamb occur in meat. While vegetables aren#39;t immune to problems like toxic soil and pesticides, they are less likely to carry large amounts of antibiotics and hormones. Not surprisingly, vegetarianism is gaining traction among health-conscious urbanites in China, though it is still uncommon in much of the country. #39;Vegetable is the lesser of two evils, #39; said Sandy Chen, research director of consumer consultancy TNS. Even former Premier Wen Jiabao proposed a nationwide campaign of #39;one vegetarian day every week.#39;不让人意外的是,原来在中国稀罕的素食主义,目前在注重健康的城里人中开始流行了。 It#39;s hard to be completely safe when living in China. But if shoppers spend wisely, they can dramatically improve their food safety while staying within a budget. /201306/243923A man is driving up a steep, narrow mountain road. Here are four tips to help you polish your public speaking。 1. Assess yourself. What part of public speaking makes you nervous? Where have you slipped up in the past? One reason public speaking is so nerve-racking is because there#39;s so much to manage — your presence, your words, your delivery, and your reaction. Determine your weakest points, from stuttering to stiff hands, in order to tailor your speech improvement。1. 2. Find opportunities to practice. It#39;s hard to feel confident about speaking if it#39;s something you rarely do, so look for the chance to polish your technique in everyday life. At a dinner party? Offer to give the toast. Working on a new project at the office? Present it at the weekly staff meeting. Public speaking is like anything else: the more you do it, the better you#39;ll become。2. 3. Dress the part. Confidence is crucial, and you#39;ll be much more sure of yourself if you know that your appearance conveys a sense of authority. It#39;s important to look put-together, and the focus should be on your words, not your outfit。3. 4. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Begin with standard prep techniques, like writing note cards and practicing in front of your friends, but also take the time to do some research. Find out as much as you can about your audience, the environment, and the tools and media that will be available. Most importantly, be sure that you#39;re achieving what was asked of you — confirm that you#39;re answering the right question and fulfilling the expectations of your audience。4. Above all else, learn to relax. Everyone understands the stress and pressure involved with public speaking, so know that your audience will be empathetic toward your efforts. Just remember the basics — to stand up straight, smile, and make eye contact — and be yourself, because genuine enthusiasm are key to making great connections。 /201302/224885

Chaps, if you’re wondering whether the lady of your dreams wants a big family, the answer could be staring you in the face. Women with feminine looks are more likely to long for lots of children, according to research – and the softer their features, the bigger a brood they have in mind. The study suggests that men desperate to be dads should seek women with button noses, large eyes and full lips, as they are likely to want at least four children. But those less keen on fatherhood would be better setting their sights on less delicate sorts, who may only be interested in having one child. The St Andrews University scientists believe their finding can be explained by the female sex hormone oestrogen, with high levels making features softer and nurturing the maternal instinct. The discovery of a link between broodiness and delicate looks could explain the maternal instincts of Hollywood beauty Angelina Jolie, who has adopted three children and had three of her own. Jools Oliver, a former model, has a family of four with her chef husband Jamie, while actress Reese Witherspoon had two children by the age of 27. The researchers asked 25 young women how many children they wanted and when they would like to have them, and measured their oestrogen levels. Miriam Law Smith of St Andrews University’s Perception Lab, which specialises in face research, said: ‘The more oestrogen they had, the more children they wanted. We were surprised to find such a strong result.’ In a second experiment, a different group of young women had their photos taken and were asked about their desire for children. Dr Law Smith then created a composite image of the faces of the women with the strongest maternal instinct, and another based on the women who were least interested in having a family. The face made up of the features of the most maternal women was judged as more feminine by a group of male and female volunteers. On average, the most maternal women wanted 4.3 children – almost three more than those judged to be the least feminine, the journal Hormones and Behavior reports. /201303/231005
