I gave this talk at Facebook not so long ago在脸谱不久前我给to about 100 employees,大约100名员工做这个演讲。and a couple hours later, there was a young woman who works there几小时后,在脸谱工作的一个年轻女性sitting outside my little desk,坐到我小桌子旁边,and she wanted to talk to me. I said, okay, and she sat down, and we talked. And she said, ;I learned something today. I learned that I need to keep my hand up.;我知道我需要举起我的手。”I said, ;What do you mean?;我说,“你指什么啊?”She said, ;Well, youre giving this talk,她说,“你在讲这个话时,and you said you were going to take two more questions. And I had my hand up with lots of other people, and you took two more questions. And I put my hand down, and I noticed all the women put their hand down,我把手放下来,我注意到所有女性都把手放下来,and then you took more questions,然后你又回答了很多问题,only from the men.;仅有男性参与。”And I thought to myself,我自己想了一下,wow, if its me -- who cares about this, obviously --如果换成是我,谁会在乎这个,明显地giving this talk --做这次演讲,and during this talk, I cant even notice在这演讲中,我甚至没注意到that the mens hands are still raised,男人们的手是不是还一直举着,and the womens hands are still raised,女人们的手是不是还一直举着,how good are we我们到底有多出色,as managers of our companies and our organizations当我们作为公司和组织的经理人的时候,at seeing that the men are reaching for opportunities以及当我们作为少数,与男性竞争more than women? Weve got to get women to sit at the table. Message number two:第二条:make your partner a real partner. Ive become convinced that weve made more progress in the workforce我已经确信我们在职场than we have in the home. The data shows this very clearly. If a woman and a man work full-time如果一个女性和一个男性同时全职and have a child,并有一个小孩,the woman does twice the amount of housework the man does,女性比起男性要做两倍多家务活儿,and the woman does three times女性比起男性做了三倍多the amount of childcare the man does. So shes got three jobs or two jobs,所以她有了2份,3份工作,and hes got one. Who do you think drops out when someone needs to be home more? The causes of this are really complicated,这个的理由实在太复杂,and I dont have time to go into them. And I dont think Sunday football-watching但我也不认为周日看美式足球and general laziness is the cause. I think the cause is more complicated. I think, as a society,我认为,作为一个社会,we put more pressure on our boys to succeed我们总是更希望男孩子们成功,than we do on our girls. I know men that stay home我知道有居家男人and work in the home to support wives with careers,呆在家里做内务持职场妻子and its hard. When I go to the Mommy-and-Me stuff当我去“妈咪和我”的培训课时,and I see the father there,我看到那里的父亲,I notice that the other mommies我留意到其他妈咪dont play with him. And thats a problem,这是个问题,because we have to make it as important a job,因为我们得把内务变成一个重要的工作because its the hardest job in the world to work inside the home,因为它是世界上最难的工作-居家工作for people of both genders,无论男人女人,if were going to even things out and let women stay in the workforce. Studies show that households with equal earning研究表明夫妻收入相等、and equal responsibility且夫妻分担责任相当的家庭also have half the divorce rate. And if that wasnt good enough motivation for everyone out there,如果这数据并不那么鼓舞人,they also have more --还有更多的how shall I say this on this stage? --在这个讲台我该怎么讲呢?they know each other more in the biblical sense as well. 201509/397722

But the next day I went to Soweto,第二天 我去了索韦托the poor town just southwest of Johannesburg,约翰内斯堡西南面一个很贫穷的城镇that had been the center of the antiapartheid movement. It was a short distance from the city into the township,这座城镇离约翰内斯堡主城区并不远but the entry was sudden, jarring and harsh. I passed into a world completely unlike the one I came from. My visit to Soweto became an early lesson in how naive I was. Microsoft was donating computers and software to a community center there. The kind of thing we did in the ed States. But it became clear to me, very quickly, that this was not the ed States. I had seen statistics on poverty,我之前看过关于贫困的统计数字but I had never really seen poverty. The people there lived in corrugated tin shacks当地人住在简陋的金属棚里with no electricity, no water, no toilets. Most people didnt wear shoes. They walked barefoot along the streets,赤脚在街上走except there were no streets, just ruts in the mud. The community center had no consistent source of power. 201411/342429And yes I checked it clear没错 我很确信Now I know that youve heard the cliche e that你们肯定听过一句名言life is a marathon not a sprint生命是马拉松 而不是冲刺And Im going to tell you that sometimes我要告诉你们 有时you dont even have the time to prepare for your marathon你甚至连为马拉松做准备的时间都没有See I only had eight weeks我就只有八周时间but the opportunity to raise money for New York City kids was too great但为纽约市的孩子们募集资金的机会太重要了But here is difference但是你们不一样today you are prepared你们今天已经做好了准备See if I didnt leave school early如果我没有辍学I would have been more prepared sometimes when I first was starting out我在最开始着手事业时可能就会更有准备一些I would have been more prepared in some of those boardrooms在一些会议中 我可能也会更有准备一些I would be in the boardrooms negotiating我在会议室中开会商谈事务时I wouldnt be like, what are they talking about? Go out and finish my economics class去把经济学课程学清楚再来I wouldnt be writing memos my secretary would be saying我写的便函也不至于会被秘书说aint nuts will say it like that没有什么比这更屁不通的了But you are prepared不过你们做好了准备Today, you have earned your Howard degree今天 你们获得了霍华德的学位Youve earned your Howard degree你们获得了霍华德的学位You have earned your Howard degree你们获得了霍华德的学位And today而且今天youre not just graduating from the greatest black school in the world你们不仅是从全世界最伟大的黑人学校毕业了youre graduating from the greatest university on this earth你们还是从这颗星球上最伟大的大学毕业了Be clear, # be clear我明确提醒一下 这里值得#So Ill ask you again我再问你们一次do you know how powerful you are?你们知道自己有多强大吗Do you know? Now some of your dreams are going to take longer than you think有些人的梦想可能要比想象的花更长时间It took most of you 4 years to get here大多数人四年毕业了some of you 5, some of you 6有些人花了五年甚至六年If I got, Ill be我如果没辍学 估计也要那么久201501/354619I know the irony strikes like with the force of a cartoon anvil now, but...我现在明白了反讽就像用卡通铁砧去打击你,但……So they had hoped that I would take a vocational degree; I wanted to study English literature. A compromise was reaced that in retrospect satisfied nobody, and I went up to study Modern Languages. Hardly had my parents car rounded the corner at the end of the road than I ditched German and scuttled off down the Classics corridor. I cannot remember telling my parents that I was studying Classics; they might well have found out for the first time on graduation day. Of all the subjects on this planet, I think they would have been hard put to name one less useful than Greek mythology when it came to securing the keys to an executive bathroom. I would like to make it clear, in parenthesis, that I do not blame my parents for their point of view. There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibily lies with you. What is more, I cannot criticize my parents for hoping that I would never experience poverty. They had been poor themselves, and I have since been poor, and I quite agree with them that it is not an ennobling experience. Poverty entails fear, and stress, and sometimes depression; it means a thousand petty humiliations and hardships. Climbing out of poverty by your own efforts, that is something on which to pride yourself, but poverty itself is romanticized only by fools. 201401/273753

Im a loyal and disciplined member of the African National Congress. I am therefore in full agreement with all its objectives, strategies and tactics. The need to unite the people of our country is as important a task now as it always has been. No individual leader is able to take on this enormous task on his own. It is our task as leaders to place our views before our organization and to allow the democratic structures to decide on the way forward. On the question of democratic practice, I feel duty-bound to make the point that a leader of the movement is a person who has been democratically elected at a national conference. This is a principle which must be upheld without any exceptions. /201305/242029

So now people say, ;You take these happy pills, and do you feel happy?;现在人们会问:你吃了这些快乐丸(指抗抑郁药),你快乐么And I dont.不But I dont feel sad about having to eat lunch,但是我不会因为要吃饭而不开心and I dont feel sad about my answering machine,不会因为要回电话而不开心and I dont feel sad about taking a shower. I feel more, in fact, I think, because I can feel sadness without nullity. I feel sad about professional disappointments, about damaged relationships, about global warming. Those are the things that I feel sad about now. And I said to myself, well, what is the conclusion?最后我问自己, ;结论是什么呢?;How did those people who have better lives even with bigger depression manage to get through? What is the mechanism of resilience? And what I came up with over time was that the people who deny their experience,我总是一次次地遇见抑郁之后的康复者不愿意接受这段经历the ones who say, ;I was depressed a long time ago and I never want to think about it again他们会说, ;我很久之前抑郁过,我再也不想回忆那段时光了and Im not going to look at it and Im just going to get on with my life,;我也不会再去分析它,我只希望继续自己当下的生活Ironically, those are the people who are most enslaved by what they have. Shutting out the depression strengthens it. While you hide from it, it grows. And the people who do better are the ones who are able to tolerate the fact而另外一些人他们承认并接纳自己有抑郁这个事实that they have this condition. Those who can tolerate their depression are the ones who achieve resilience. So Frank Russakoff said to me,弗兰克对我说;If I had it again to do over, I suppose I wouldnt do it this way,如果一切重新来过,那么我可能会换种处理方式but in a strange way, Im grateful for what Ive experienced. Im glad to have been in the hospital 40 times. It taught me so much about love,这段经历让我深刻的理解了什么是爱and my relationship with my parents and my doctors has been so precious to me, and will be always.;我的爱人,我的父母,以及我的医生,这对我而言都是巨大的恩赐,过去是,将来也是.And Maggie Robbins said,玛吉·罗宾斯说;I used to volunteer in an AIDS clinic,我在艾滋诊所做过志愿者,and I would just talk and talk and talk,我跟自己负责的病人不断的说话,and the people I was dealing with werent very responsive, and I thought,但是他们的反应并不积极,然后我想Thats not very friendly or helpful of them. And then I realized,后来我意识到I realized that they werent going to do more than make those first few minutes of small talk. It was simply going to be an occasion where I didnt have AIDS and I wasnt dying,第一次的聊天实际上是一个机会,让他们认识到虽然我没有艾滋病,我没有等待死亡,but could tolerate the fact that they did and they were. Our needs are our greatest assets. It turns out Ive learned to give all the things I need.;后来我学会了如何尽我所能(去帮助他人)Valuing ones depression does not prevent a relapse,正视抑郁的价值并不能保不再复发but it may make the prospect of relapse and even relapse itself easier to tolerate. The question is not so much of finding great meaning and deciding your depression has been very meaningful. Its of seeking that meaning and thinking, when it comes again,而是要去寻找这样的意义,能够让你思考,当抑郁卷土重来;This will be hellish, but I will learn something from it.;;这会向下地狱般痛苦,但是我会受益良多I have learned in my own depression how big an emotion can be,我从自己的抑郁中看到情绪的作用能够如此之大how it can be more real than facts,甚至能够盖过客观存在and I have found that that experience而且我发现我的这段经历has allowed me to experience positive emotion in a more intense and more focused way. The opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality,抑郁的反面不是快乐而是活力and these days, my life is vital, even on the days when Im sad. I felt that funeral in my brain,我看到自己的脑海中也进行着一场葬礼and I sat next to the colossus at the edge of the world,我坐在世界的边缘,挨着一个巨人and I have discovered something inside of myself that I would have to call a soul我发现身体里的一些东西,称为灵魂的东西that I had never formulated until that day 20 years ago when hell came to pay me a surprise visit. I think that while I hated being depressed and would hate to be depressed again,我想,虽然我很厌恶抑郁时候的状态,也很厌恶抑郁旧病复发Ive found a way to love my depression. I love it because it has forced me to find and cling to joy. I love it because each day I decide, sometimes gamely,我爱它,因为它让我在生活中牢牢抓住让我活下去的理由,and sometimes against the moments reason, to cleave to the reasons for living. And that, I think, is a highly privileged rapture. Thank you. 201602/427765My interpreter told me their stories. We have no freedom, they said. We hope still, though, that we could leave this house someday and go someplace else where we actually get paid for our dyeing. Its estimated that more than 4,000 children are enslaved on Lake Volta,据估计,有超过4000名儿童在沃尔特湖水库被奴役,the largest man-made lake in the world. When we first arrived, I went to have a quick look. I saw what seemed to be a family fishing on a boat,我看到似乎是一家人在船上,two older brothers, some younger kids, makes sense right? Wrong. They were all enslaved. Children are taken from their families and trafficked and vanished,孩子们从家里被带出来被贩卖,and theyre forced to work endless hours on these boats on the lake, even though they do not know how to swim. This young child is eight years old. He was trembling when our boat approached,当我们的船靠近的时候他在发抖,frightened it would run over his tiny canoe. He was petrified he would be knocked in the water. The skeletal tree limbs submerged in Lake Volta often catch the fishing nets, and weary,湖面下浸着些树的枝干经常会挂住渔网,frightened children are thrown into the water to untether the lines. Many of them drown. For as long as he can recall, hes been forced to work on the lake. Terrified of his master, he will not run away,他非常害怕主人,不敢逃跑,and since hes been treated with cruelty all his life,由于他从小就被残酷对待,he passes that down to the younger slaves that he manages. 201510/403199Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Chris Anderson: Ethan, Chris Anderson:Ethan, congrats quite the reaction. That was a powerful talk. Not quite a complete standing, though, and Im guessing that some people here and maybe a few watching online, maybe someone knows a teenager or a friend or whatever who got sick, maybe died from some drug overdose. Im sure youve had these people approach you before. What do you say to them? Ethan Nadelmann: Chris, the most amazing thing thats happened of late Ethan Nadelmann:Chris,is that Ive met a growing number of people who have actually lost a sibling or a child to a drug overdose, and 10 years ago, those people just wanted to say, lets line up all the drug dealers and shoot them and that will solve it. And what theyve come to understand is that the Drug War did nothing to protect their kids. If anything, it made it more likely that those kids were put at risk. And so theyre now becoming part of this drug policy reform movement. Theres other people who have kids, ones addicted to alcohol, the other ones addicted to cocaine or heroin, and they ask themselves the question: Why does this kid get to take one step at a time and try to get better and that ones got to deal with jail and police and criminals all the time? So everybodys understanding, the Drug Wars not protecting anybody. CA: Certainly in the U.S., youve got political gridlock CA:on most issues. Is there any realistic chance of anything actually shifting on this issue in the next five years? Id say its quite remarkable. Im getting all these calls from journalists now who are saying to me,Ethan, it seems like the only two issues advancing politically in America right now are marijuana law reform and gay marriage. What are you doing right? And then youre looking at bipartisanship breaking out with, actually, Republicans in the Congress and state legislatures allowing bills to be enacted with majority Democratic support,so weve gone from being sort of the third rail, the most fearful issue of American politics,to becoming one of the most successful. Ethan, thank you so much for coming to TEDGlobal. Chris, thanks so much. TED Global。Thank you. Thank you. 201503/363078
