The Metropolitan Museum of Art大都会艺术物馆The Metropolitan’s new director gives his first interview与大都会物馆新管理人的初次面谈“I FEEL like Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz’; picked up by a whirlwind and dropped down in a land where everything is much more brightly coloured,” says Thomas Campbell, who on January 1st became the new director and CEO of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. His description is both apt and unexpected.“我感觉像《绿野仙踪》里的桃乐茜;被一阵旋风刮起,然后在一个地方掉了下来,那里一切都是色斑斓,”托马斯#8226;坎贝尔的描述恰如其分,也令人出乎意外。 Until five months ago, the British-born 46-year-old, educated at Oxford University and London’s Courtauld Institute of Art, was by his own account, “an open shirt, tweed jacket sort of guy”. He liked to clear his diary to give time to his research and writing. Now he owns several new suits and has a crammed schedule. The studies to which he has devoted the past 20 years have had to become a hobby, like the watercolours he paints. The Campbells have moved from the suburbs to a flat near the Fifth Avenue museum. It comes with what many consider the international museum world’s top job. Cinderella also comes to mind when considering the events of the past year. During the search for a successor to Philippe de Montebello, the French-born director who was retiring after 31 years as head of the museum, Mr Campbell, a British tapestry specialist, never featured on the gossips’ shortlist, although all but two of the museum’s directors in the last century have been recruited from within. Mr Campbell joined the Met in 1995, but he has never headed a department and was only one of its ten curators in European sculpture and decorative arts. What the gossips overlooked—but the search committee did not—are the two exceptional exhibitions of Renaissance and Baroque tapestries that he organised in 2002 and 2007. A surprise hit with both public and critics, the shows demonstrated Mr Campbell’s considerable scholarly, diplomatic and administrative skills. In addition, supervising the museum’s Antonio Ratti Textile Centre introduced him to curators from almost every department and increased his knowledge of the museum’s immense holdings, which number more than 2m objects. Thinking about his new role and all those treasures, Mr Campbell smiles and says, “I feel like a kid in a candy store.” This is probably not a phrase the aristocratic Mr de Montebello would have uttered. Superficially, he and the boyish Mr Campbell could not be more different. Yet superficial is what their differences appear to be. Mr de Montebello has been characterised as a connoisseur; a curator’s director. He says that the choice of Mr Campbell as his successor “sends out a clear message that scholarship is more important than marketing”. Mr Campbell is proud that, as he takes over, the Met has exhibitions on Babylonian trade routes, the Italian Renaissance, African textiles and 17th-century Chinese watercolours, all planned by his predecessor. Both men prize scholarship, a global outlook and outreach, while keeping a respectful eye on the bottom line. Mr Campbell has inherited a well run, financially sound institution. Emily Rafferty, its president, is a gifted fund-raiser. The museum’s last annual report values the endowment at .5 billion. Mr Campbell believes that the great encyclopedic museum he heads can be “a place of inspiration, almost of refuge and hope” in a difficult economic climate, but cuts will have to come. Some will not be unwelcome. In Mr Campbell’s view fewer expensive loan shows will free up financial and creative resources for innovative displays of works from the permanent collection. Some changes will not be money-saving. Not only does the new director intend to put the entire museum collection online, but he is also eager to use the internet more inventively to “tell the great stories of the objects we own and give visitors a sense of their artistry.” Mr Campbell buzzes with ideas about how this might be done. “It is a world of opportunities,” he acknowledges but adds quickly, “the challenge is delivering quality content.” For all his boyish appearance and references to “The Wizard of Oz”, Mr Campbell speaks with conviction and determination. There is no doubting his maturity, as well as his enthusiasm and his passion, when he talks about his feeling for art and his sense of responsibility to the institution he leads as well as to its millions of visitors. 201206/185931。

Books and Arts; Book Review;文艺;书评;Paul Volcker保罗·沃尔克Tall tale伟人传奇The most influential central banker of the modern era当代最具影响力的央行行长Volcker: The Triumph of Persistence. By William Silber. ALAN GREENSPAN may be the most famous central banker of the modern era, but Paul Volcker has been the most influential. He played a crucial diplomatic role during the death of the Bretton Woods financial system in the early 1970s, which severed the link between money and gold and ushered in floating exchange rates. As head of the Federal Reserve from 1979, Mr Volcker then tamed the inflation that ensued, bringing monetary stability in the face of political opposition to the very high interest rates required. In doing so, he set the template for modern economic management, built around an independent central bank with an implicit, or explicit, inflation target. After serving at the Treasury under Richard Nixon, the towering (6ft 7in) Mr Volcker was appointed to the Fed by both Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. More recently he has been an adviser to Barack Obama, who traded on the former Fed chiefs credibility by dubbing his plan to end banks proprietary trading the “Volcker rule”. This long record of public service earns the admiration of William Silber, his new biographer. Mr Volcker could have earned much more on Wall Street. Upon becoming head of the Fed, his salary was halved. To balance their domestic budget, his wife, , took a part-time job as a book-keeper and let a room in their flat. He smoked cheap (and smelly) cigars because he could not imagine spending as much as on a stogie. In later life, when he chaired investigations into the UN oil-for-food programme or Arthur Andersen, an accountancy firm, he charged only a token fee. Yet Mr Volcker still lacked the consolation of popularity, unlike Mr Greenspan, who was praised by the press and politicians for much of his term. Democrats blamed Mr Volcker for losing them the 1980 election because of his tight monetary policy. Milton Friedman saw him as insufficiently monetarist, and many in the Reagan White House regarded him with suspicion as a Democrat. Mr Volcker barely made it though his eight years at the Fed. He nearly failed to be reappointed in 1983 and almost resigned in 1986, when defeated on a key vote. It was only in retrospect that his reputation grew; Mr Silbers well-written book should help cement it. While Mr Volckers record at the Fed is well-known, what might be more surprising is the crucial role he played in the exchange-rate crises of the early 1970s. Like an economic Henry Kissinger, Mr Volcker shuttled around the world to placate foreign allies in the face of Nixons marked indifference to international economics. “I dont give a shit about the lira,” was one of Tricky Dicks choice phrases. For decades politicians had mouthed their support for a strong currency, but Nixon cut through the claptrap. “Volcker thinks we ought to sacrifice the domestic economy to save the dollar,” he said. “Im not in favour of that.” The dollar duly fell sharply in the 1970s, although it rebounded under Mr Volckers tenure at the Fed. Mr Silber praises his subject for stabilising the currency and also for opposing Reagans budget deficits. Whether he is right to say that it was those deficits that pushed up real interest rates in the 1980s is harder to tell; after all, deficits are even higher now and real rates are negative:当时政客们已泛泛而谈持美元长达数十年,但尼克松一语打消了这种言不由衷的空谈。 Perhaps the most remarkable fact about Mr Volcker is that he has spent much of his career dealing with Wall Street without being captured by its influence. Mr Silber highlights his subjects commitment to financial reform, but fails to mention one of his more pointed bon mots—that the only useful modern financial innovation has been the automated teller machine. Such robust cynicism about Wall Street, along with his links to the current president, may explain why Mr Volcker is not a hero of the conservative movement, despite his anti-inflationary credentials. /201209/198726

Over several days, your urine would become saturated with minerals. And drinking it would really tax the kidneys, whose job it is to flush unwanted minerals and toxins from the body. Drink urine long enough and you may go into kidney failure. On a related note, you may have heard that in some cultures, urine is used as medicine. Therersquo;s no hard evidence that urine has any curative powers, which doesnrsquo;t mean it has none. If you found yourself instantly transported to the freezing arctic, your first concern would be keeping warm. But what about the animals that make their homes on these vast fields of ice and snow? Do polar bears need to worry about freezing to death? Actually, a polar bears biggest problem is keeping cool, not keeping warm. Thanks to its thick coat of fur, its tough hide, and a four inch layer of blubber, a polar bear is extremely well insulated. Indeed, if a resting polar bear is photographed with infra-red film—a kind of film which can measure the amount of heat escaping from a body–the polar bear wont even show up at all. That doesnt mean polar bears are as cold as the surrounding ice; their normal body temperature is about the same as ours.It simply means that polar bears retain their body heat very well. In fact, a polar bear can rest in a pit of icy snow, at temperatures as low as minus thirty-four degrees Fahrenheit, without needing to burn any extra fat for warmth! While this insulation is great for keeping warm, it can lead to some serious overheating. As a result, polar bears dont like to run after their prey. Chasing a seal at only four and a half miles an hour, a polar bears temperature climbs to a feverish hundred degrees. It may have to lie on its back with its feet in the air to cool down. Polar bears prefer to hunt by waiting near a hole in the ice, and letting dinner come to them. Its the best way to conserve energy, and keep cool, in the Arctic north.
