President Bush has asked Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to travel to India. Secretary Rice will arrive in India Wednesday after attending a NATO meeting in London. Mr. Bush is keeping in direct contact with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. President Bush called Prime Minister Singh on Sunday. It was their second conversation since the Mumbai attack began to unfold on Wednesday. White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe says Mr. Bush underscored his full support for the investigation into the attack. He says the president assured the prime minister that the U.S. will provide all necessary resources and will work with the international community to bring those responsible for the bloodshed to justice. Meanwhile, the terrorist attack half a world away dominated the news interview programs that air every Sunday on American television. On A's This Week, Richard Lugar - the senior Republican on the Senate Relations Committee - noted that India has linked the Mumbai terrorists to elements in Pakistan. He stressed the need for high-level diplomacy to deal with escalating tensions in the region. I am confident that there is a good opportunity at this point for the Indians and Pakistanis to understand that the dissident group that probably caused this could cause harm to both of them," said Senator Lugar. Appearing on the same program, Democrat Jack Reed, a member of Senate Armed Services Committee, was asked about pressure from inside India on the government to do something to stop militants from crossing over from Pakistan. He said India is keeping a close watch on the next steps taken by the Pakistani leadership. I think they are looking for some tangible signs from the Pakistanis, not just rhetorical flourishes - tangible signs that they are going to take effective action," said Senator Reed. The Pakistani Ambassador to the ed States - Husain Haqqani - told CNN's Late Edition that his country has condemned the Mumbai attack and is on the same side as India and the ed States in combating terrorism. And I don't think we will leave any stone unturned in helping with the investigation or dealing with any individual or group that might have connection with it as long as we have evidence against them," said Husain Haqqani. Haqqani stressed that while the terrorists in this case may have lived or trained in Pakistan that does not mean there was any official sanction of their acts. He said Pakistan has also been a victim of terrorism, and it is time for Pakistanis and Indians to work together to deal with a common threat. 200812/57602British men are gearing up to spend a small fortune in presents to mollify their wives and girlfriends for all the time they intend to spend watching this summer's soccer World Cup, a new survey showed.A Flower Council of Holland survey of 1,000 Britons showed men are prepared to spend 20 pounds (.86) a time or slightly more saying sorry for being glued to the gogglebox or heading down to the pub to watch matches with their mates when the tournament kicks off in South Africa this week. However, the research also reveals that women, while appreciating expensive gifts, are just as happy with a bunch of flowers (33 percent), followed by chocolates (22 percent) or a good meal (15 percent) and most put the value of expected apologetic booty at just under nine pounds per incident."In response to these findings, a clever new iPhone app has been unveiled to make sure our men stay firmlyin the public house rather than the doghouse during the four-week period," the Flower Council of Holland said in a statement. The free "ScoreAtHome" app helps you find the nearest florist to the pub so you can call through your floral apology while still sipping a pint. It also allows you to check the latest football scores on the go.【Notes】Vocabulary:gear up to do sth.: 准备好做某事mollify: to make somebody feel less angry or upset 使平静;抚慰be glued to sth.: to give all your attention to something 全神贯注看着某物gogglebox: lt;英口gt; 电视机kick off: when a football game or a team, etc.kicks off, the game starts (指足球比赛等)开球,开始booty: valuable things that are stolen, especially by soldiers in a time of war 战利品be in the doghouse: if you are in the doghouse, somebody is annoyed with you because of something that you have done 受冷落;失体面;丢脸on the go:活跃;忙个不停201006/105781Being online boosts chances of being in lovePeople who have Internet access at home are more likely to be in a relationship, with the Web gaining in importance as a meeting place for those seeking love, according to US research.Researchers from Stanford University said the Internet is especially important for bringing together same-sex couples. The Internet may also soon replace friends as the main way in which Americans meet their partners."Although prior research on the social impacts of Internet use has been rather ambiguous about the social cost of time spent online, our research suggests that Internet access has an important role to play in helping Americans find mates," said Michael Rosenfeld, an associate professor of sociology. The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association in Atlanta on Monday, showed that 82 percent of people in the study who had Internet access at home also had a spouse or romantic partner, compared to 62 percent for those who did not have Internet access. The study used data from a winter survey of 4,002 adults across the ed States. Slightly more than 3,000 had a spouse or romantic partner.Rosenfeld and Reuben Thomas, of the City University of New York, found the Internet is the one social arena that is unambiguously gaining importance as a place where couples meet."It is possible that in the next several years the Internet could eclipse friends as the most influential way Americans meet their romantic partners, displacing friends out of the top position for the first time since the early 1940s," Rosenfeld said in a statement. The researchers said they found that the Internet was especially important for finding potential partners in groups where the supply is small or difficult to identify such as in the gay, lesbian, and middle-aged heterosexual communities.Rosenfeld said that among the couples who met within two years of the survey, 61 percent of same-sex couples and 21 percent of heterosexual couples met online.Vocabulary:arena: an area of activity that concerns the public(活动场所)eclipse: to make somebody/something seem dull or unimportant by comparison(使失色;使相形见绌;使丧失重要性)背单词 — 装英语词汇201008/111761Coolest cars of 08, part 1 Fortune's Sue Callaway picks the fastest, best performing and good looking sports cars and takes them to the track. Hi, I am Sue Callaway, car columnist of Fortune Magazine. And I am here the Las Vegas motor’s field way to test the coolest cars of 08. Wow, Lamborghini knows not only how to feel the joy ride, this is a thrill ride, this is a most engaging brutal, drawn, crazy car out here. So many cars coming up today, even with the super cars are building in so many small electronics that control your traction in your brake balance, well this doesn’t have all that junk on it, this is a pure Italian monster. Porsche has been evolving and refining the 911 Turbo for decades. You might think that make it ubiquitous, he did see lot of them on the roads. But I’ve got to tell you, of all the cars here today, this is the most capable and easiest to drive of all of them. Stand out to the rest of the competition, but only you as a driver look amazing. This is the incredible car that gold standard of sports cars. I had to sit down for this one, I never through I’d see it, but I am glad to finally, an American super car that is worthy of its competition. The Corvette ZR1 is incredibly competent, incredibly powerful machine. Trashing control on, it’s balanced, it’s powerful, it / to do anything stupid. Trashing control off, you can slide this car around for days unlike an all-wheel drive car like the 911 Turbo. Bravo, GM, this wins the final reward. But here’s a strange problem I ran into today, the Nissan GT-R is so competent, I really wasn’t aware of the performance level I was getting. Sure I felt the tiers’ squealing and you know, it’s hitting the gas as hard as I could on the street way, but it felt like kind of a daily drive until I look down and realize that hitting higher numbers than any other cars so far today. In fact, for 70,000 dollars, the cheapest car in the line up. You are getting performance that battles the 911 Turbo, the Lamborghini Gallardo, all the other all wheel drive competition out there. Are there a few niggles, its second gear too short, but I change the shape of paddle shipped. Yeah, maybe, but, come on, this is an insanely good deal and an insanely competent. 200811/54874

Indian Trade Pacts Will Contribute to Economic Integration of Region印度新签贸易协定将促成区域经济整合Two trade pacts signed recently between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and India and South Korea are expected to promote economic integration of one of the world's fastest growing regions. The pacts also signal that India is keen to attract more investment from East Asia. It took six years of hard negotiations before New Delhi could seal a free trade pact with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) this month. The pact with the ten ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Brunei, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos) was signed a week after India and South Korea concluded a separate agreement to scrap or reduce tariffs, in the coming years. Greater economic accessEconomists say the benefits which will eventually flow from these pacts will be worth the wait, as India gains easier access to an economically dynamic region of more than 600 million people. In turn, India offers South East Asian countries a market of over a billion people. The pacts are seen as a significant step in a process that has seen India gradually look beyond its traditional trading partners in the West towards the faster growing economies of several East Asian countries, which are lie closer to its shores. Rajiv Kumar, head of the Indian Council of Research in International Economic Relations in New Delhi, points out that Asia's share in India's exports has risen steadily in the last four years. He says that the free trade associations or FTAs have been signed at a crucial time, when global economic patterns are changing. (India Council of Research in International Economic Relations)的会长,库马尔(Rajiv Kumar)指出,过去四年亚洲市场占印度出口的比例稳定上升。 We know the global economic gravity is slowly but steadily shifting toward the Pacific basin and to Asia and it will be good for India to be connected and integrated with that," said Kumar. "And, these two FTAs will be key for India to explore the Asian markets, make better use of it, and it will be key to India's interest in joining and strengthening the Asian economic community, which is in an incipient stage."“我们知道全球经济重心正在缓慢但稳定地往太平洋和亚洲转移。因此,印度加入这一进程并与之进行整合,对印度来说,是件好事。新签定的这两项协定对印度开发亚洲市场是很关键的,所以要好好利用。这对印度加入和加强亚洲经济共同体的愿望也是很重要的。这个共同体目前目前还处于初始阶段。”High expectationsHopes are high that trade between India and ASEAN, which totaled billion last year, will jump by at least 20 percent in the coming years. 20%。Under the pact, tariffs on textiles, electronics, chemicals and machinery will be reduced and eventually eliminated. However imports which could affect India's crucial farm sector, such as rubber, have been excluded. India is hoping the pact will give a push to exports in it pharmaceuticals, chemicals and auto sectors. S.K. Mohanty is a senior fellow at the think tank, Research and Information System for Developing Countries, in New Delhi. He says that India's rapidly growing economy has been getting much of its momentum from a huge domestic market. But he says higher exports could contribute to higher growth. Export is becoming a very important factor for India, in terms of having a very high level of economic growth and, therefore, export sector has been given high priority," said Mohanty. "So, India's persistent strategy is to ensure that its external sector is growing much faster than the rest of the economy." “出口正在成为印度追求高速经济增长目标的一个非常重要的因素。所以出口业的优先地位很高。印度所坚持的策略是确保出口业的增长速度高于其他经济行业。”Looking beyond tradeIndian policy makers also hope that the benefits of the pact will extend beyond trade and make it easier for India to attract investors from East Asian countries. India is looking for billions of dollars in foreign investment in sectors such as infrastructure. But investment has been slow to flow, as many investors worry about regulations which make it difficult to do business in the country. Rajiv Kumar says the free trade pacts may reassure investors that India is changing as its economic profile grows. These FTA's would also signal to the investors in South Korea and ASEAN that India is now, as it were, much more open to business," he said. "So we can expect more investment and technology flows. We need as much investment as we can get in infrastructure, in energy, in roads, in buildings and, even more important, we will need investment in our housing sector." “这些自贸协定还会给韩国和东盟的投资人发出一个信号,那就是印度的经济开放程度比过去提高了。我们期待更多的投资和科技流入。我们在基础设施、能源开发、修路和建筑许多方面都需要大量的外资。更重要的是,我们的住房业也需要投资。”However, economists point out that India will have to compete with China, whose goods have aly flooded Southeast Asian countries. India and East Asia will also need to build better transport and communication links to realize the full benefits of growing trade. 08/82207

The Luxe Life of a...America's super-rich on living large, and the path leading to extreme wealthHello, I’m Bob Brown, welcome to 20-20 in touch. You may be living paycheck to paycheck, but the number of billionaires in America keeps going up. So on Friday, 20-20 is all about winning. Who are the winners? How did they get into that elite club? And what’s it like to have the best that money can buy? Here is Chris Connelly. To get there, you could go over the river on a yacht, through the wood on a polo pony, or just hop on your private jet and soar to the swankiest neighborhoods where a different kind of wildly well-to-do. Nine million of them are living in a new world. Never before in American history have so many Americans become so wealthy, so quickly. Robert Frank is the Columbus of this new world. He calls it Richistan. Old money it’s not. Most are workaholic winners who savor their spoils. This 700-year-old French chateau, 45 minutes outside of Paris, now belongs to this man, 57-year-old American billionaire Tim Blixseth. He made more than a billion dollars in timber and real estate, but flinches when anyone calls him rich.Don’t call me those names, so that’s what I would say.Don’t call you , why not, why?Rich is a, it's a connotation to me like snooty, arrogant, nose in the air. Oh, they are rich. When they grew up, rich people were the jerks; rich people were the folks you made fun of. I don’t like rude rich people that doesn’t treat the working class, that you know, the busboys, waitresses, the parking attendants with respect. How many residences do you have now?I think maybe, I don’t know, 7 to 10, some like.Something like that private island in the Caribbean, that ski and golf spot in Montana, that place in the sun in Mexico and so much more. What dose it feel like to be a winner? It feels good. It feels really good.We just announced that we are formally engaged. Romance of Richistan carries its own set of rules and ways to seal the deal.Ex-nurse Tiffany Spadafora of Palm Beach, Florida says she was unaware of George Cludy's 70 million dollar net worth until he asked her out.We went to a restaurant and he mentioned something about his jet, and I was just like oh no.What did you think when you heard the words my jet?Trouble? Because I feared there were a stream of jet groupies following somewhere. We hope you watch 20-20 on the air every Friday night at 10/9 central time and check in online for our daily webcasts and upcoming stories at abcnews.com. I’m Bob Brown, for all of us at 20-20, we are in touch, so you’ll be in touch.03/63576

"In the Japanese, who are obviously very reliant on American military support. So it's really kind of a big moment for the ed States to re-establish how important the relationship is between it and Japan." Collaborating with southeast Asian nationsClinton waded into disputed Asian waters earlier this year when she announced that Washington could mediate conflicts between China and Southeast Asian countries claiming islands in the South China Sea. Cola warPepsi and Coca-Cola are branching out to offer healthier alternatives for consumers. CNN's Richard Lui reportsOn this week’s Fortune First, Coke or Pepsi. It is the question that has fueled the rivalry known as the 'cola wars' for decades, but the fight is no longer just about the cola.Americans are drinking less carbonated sodas and they want healthier things. Coca Cola launched Coke Zero, a calorie-free drink sweeter than Diet Coke and recently purchased Vitamin Water. The company also created 'Make every drop count ,'an interactive program which encourages coke drinkers to live healthy and active lifestyles. Pepsi is not missing a beat either. They’ve been buying healthier brands, Naked Juice, Star Foods, one of their key divisions is Quaker Foods which of course makes a variety of healthier alternatives. They had a whole chain of fast food restaurants they don’t own those any more. One of the things that they have done which is kind of innovative is they put together a theatre group. Basically it’s an alternative to the focus group. These plays don’t promote Pepsi so much as healthy lifestyles to the audience of retail Executives and Pepsi sales teams.Coke and Pepsi are not the only companies that are struggling to meet consumer demands. Many fast food giants have added healthier options to their s.Rivalries are ultimately always a good thing for the consumer at least because they spur competitiveness. South Carolina on Today showMiss Teen USA 2007 Caitlin Upton from South Carolina visits Today show to answer the map question rightThanks. Now there a clip has become a talk of the Intrenet is taken from Friday's Miss Teen USA Pageants and shows a very nervors Miss South Carolina having a very tough time when in the questionamp;answer part of the program . Take a look. Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the US on a world map. Why do you think this is ? I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because some people out there are in our nation don't have maps . And I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like such as. And I believe that they should, our education over here in the US shoud help the US should help South Africa , and should help the Iraq and Asian courtries. So we will be able to build up our future. Miss South Carolina, Caitlin Upton, good morning. Good morning.you are getting so nervous about this. But let me tell you something. You have no idea what this man says on a regular basis on this live program. That's nothing. Can we also... That's the first time you have seen that, isn't it ? Yes, actually that is the first time I have seen that. And I'm nervous just sitting here right now, live, national television again. AndI know and it was the first time actually you had been on national television (Yes, that's the first time.) where you were competing. And it was, it was just one of those moments when you were asked these questions. I am sure everything came at you at once. Yes, everything did came at me at once. And I was overwhelmed, and I made a mistake, everybody makes mistake. I'm human. At what point, Caitlin, during the answer did you start to think to yourself: Is this making any sense? Um , right when the question was asked to me, I was in completely shock and I was just overwhelmed that I seriously think I only heard about one or two words of the actual question itself. And I misunderstood....You just kind of drew a blank? Yes , I drew a blank, I misunderstood, I made a mistake. You know, as we have said, you know, we do live television everyday. Caitlin, if I can't even count the number of times I've said things, and then we've all gone the commercial break, and we look at each other, like: “What you just say?" I mean, so , please you know, don't don't let it get you down. I mean, and I know the fact that it's on Youtube and a lot of people are watching it right now . Probably has to be a double-edged sword, on the one hand you think it's kind of funny , on the other hand it's not all that funny to you, is it?No, but then again, looking back on it, I’m sitting here laughing at myself because I feel like it's that really me? standing up there answering that question, (It's not the body. You've scared us~) yeah! It's like I am not in my actual body. I give you a lot of credit for being here. You know, you could just go under the covers , but here you are ,sitting here , laugh at yourself. You know what I say, good girl. Good girl, you! Yes, definitely. You still finish what, in the top four?Yes, I actually placed the third round up . And , so and have you allowed youreslf to go back and think you what if I have done a little better on that question, how the outcome might have been different? For example, do you want to redo on that question? Of course . I would love to reanswer that question.Ok. Let me ask you that question again, the question is recent polls have shown that a fifth of Americans can't locate the US on the world map. Why do you think this is ? Caitlin?Well, personally , my friends and I we know exactly where the ed States is on our map. I don't know anyone else who dosen't. And if the statistics are correct, I believe that there should be more emphasis on geography in our educaion so people would learn how to maps better. Yeah, I gotta tell you . That was a perfect answer. Very good, Caitlin. You know, I think they should just do the thing over on Fri. And come on, let's go back to Friday night. Let's go for another Saturday. Yeah, let's just go back in time and redo everything.. Pretty girl , you are just 18 years old. Yes, I am 18. And I believe that I'm a very strong person. I have a very strong character and my parents raise me very well. What are your plans? What do you want to do? I mean, you know, in terms of after that Pageants. What are your goals? Well, my goal is to attend Appalachian State University, major in graphic design. Once grduated from there, go to L.A. and go into the International Academy of Designamp;Technology ,major in special effects, learning to design special effects for movies and television. Good for you , well , you got a lot of grade . Thank you. Cailin, good luck to you on everything! Thank you so much! And thank you for having been big enough to laugh at yourself this morning. It's hard. (Thank you!) I know. Believe me. Pageant: Normally, a pageant is a colourful public procession, show, or ceremony. Pageants are usually held out of doors and often celebrate events or people from history. But here, a pageant or a beauty pageant is a competition in which young women are judged to decide which one is the most beautiful.draw a blank: to fail to find or remember something.02/61608
