Foreigners face visa scrutiny - Popular Beijing spots for foreigners, such as Sanlitun and university areas, will be targeted by police in a fresh drive against visitors who commit crimes, outstay their visas or gain illegal employment, authorities said on Monday. The guests overstayed their welcome.(客人们待得太久,开始招人烦了。) 5. I went to the market this weekend. I wasnt looking for a new jumper but I walked past a vintage clothing stall and this just caught my eye. Helen: Ow, did it hurt? Chris: No, no. Its just a way of saying it attracted my attention and it made me want to take a closer look. I eventually bought it for only £10. What do you think? Helen: Well, its OK. But I dont really like the yellow colour with orange sleeves. Its a bit bright. Chris: What do you mean? Helen: I have to be honest Chris: bright colours dont really suit you. Chris: Oh. Well, it might not be to your taste, but Im sure other people will like it. Helen: Jen, what do you think of Chriss outfit today? Jen: Wow, thats an eye-catching jumper! Dont tell me you actually paid for that? Helen: An eye-catching jumper. So when it catches your eye, you notice it. Jen: Thats right, Helen. But eye-catching doesnt necessarily mean its bright–like Chriss interesting jumper. It can be something that you quickly see because it surprises or interests you. Chris: You can also catch other peoples eyes. Helen: Urgh, I hope no-one throws their eyes at me! Chris: Its a gesture that can be romantic-to catch someones eye across a crowded room. Jeff was about to give up and leave when he caught Sophies eye at the bar. David was impatient to leave the restaurant and raised his hand to catch the waiters eye. Chris: So you can grab someone elses attention by looking at them with your eyes. Helen: Hmm. If I see someone I like, should I be polite and ask them if I can catch their eye? Chris: No, its just something you do when you look at someone. You dont need to ask. Helen: Im looking around the room. Im looking around the room. And now Im looking at you, Chris. Im catching your eye. Chris: Thats right. Helen: Im catching your eye! Chris: Well, it is only temporary. If you look for any longer it can become a stare. Helen: Ive caught your eye! Chris: Yes, yes you have… OK, you are definitely staring at me now.

William: Hello and welcome to The English We Speak. My name is William Kremer. Helen: And Im Helen. Hello. William: So, are you going to go out after work tonight, Helen? Helen: You mean for Robs birthday? Whats the plan? William: Well, I think were just going to head to the Fox and Flowerpot at 6.00pm. Helen: Going to the pub again? No, I think Ill give it a miss this time. William: Oh no! Why? Have you got plans? Helen: No, its just...海伦:没有,只是……William: You dont like Rob, maybe? Helen: No, no–thats not the reason. I just dont like going to the pub all the time. I dont really drink, you know, and I always feel a bit awkward. William: Ah, I didnt know you were teetotal, Helen! Helen: Teetotal? Teetotal?William: Teetotal. This is an adjective that describes a person who doesnt drink alcohol. Helen: Right-so does this person just drink tea?! William: Well maybe! But actually, the word teetotal doesnt have anything to do with tea. Its spelled T.E.E.T.O.T.A.L. Lets listen to this example of the word being used:威廉:也许吧! 拼写是T.E.E.T.O.T.A.L。 Man: Have you bought the drinks for the party yet? Woman: Yep–Ive got a case of wine and two boxes of beer. Ive also got some soft drinks for Granny. Shes teetotal nowadays. Helen: Can you say, ;I dont feel like drinking beer tonight... Im going to have a teetotal evening;? William: Well not really. We describe people as teetotal, and it means that they never drink alcohol. Now, teetotal is an adjective, but there is also a noun that we can use. See if you can hear it in this example:威廉:不可以。 Man: My father used to drink heavily, you know. Every night hed have a bottle of Scotch. Maybe thats why Ive always been a teetotaller. Helen: I heard the word teetotaller. And the speaker in that clip was describing why he was a teetotaller. Now William, where does this word come from? William: Well no-one is really sure, Helen. But its worth saying that in the past it was used to describe someone who didnt drink and who also thought that drinking alcohol was a bad thing. I think nowadays its a little bit softer. Helen: Well, truth be told William, Im not a teetotaller. I like a drink every now and then but I just cant drink pint after pint of beer like you English people! William: Well, good for you Helen! But why dont you come to the pub anyway? You can just have an orange juice or a lemonade. No-one will laugh at you. Helen: No, they wont laugh at me, but they will ask me to drive them home! No, please tell Rob happy birthday but I dont feel like it tonight. But thanks for telling us about this interesting word, William. William: Well, dont mention it, Helen. Right, Im off to the pub now. Helen: Dont drink too much! William: I wont! Bye!
